Title: Tom Bechdal seminar
Post by: Frogman on September 28, 2009, 11:55:26 AM
A friend and I went to the National Hunting and Fishing Days celebration at the Stonewall Jackson Resort near Weston WV on Sunday 9/27/09.  While there we talked to Tom Bechdal about coyote hunting and then attended his coyote hunting seminar.  Here I am talking with him at his booth . . .

His seminar was very entertaining and was geared more towards less experienced coyote hunters.  He covered coyote life cycle, calling coyotes with mouth calls and electronic calls, using decoys, keeping the wind in your face, etc.  The seminar was only a little over an hour in length.

He claims to have killed an 82 pound coyote in OH.  Hit it with his car.  He has a photo of it.  Claims to have killled eight coyotes with one shot.  Shot a female that had not yet given birth to 7 pups.  Says that in 15 years of coyote hunting in the East he has killed 999 coyotes.

He feels that coyotes will continue to increase in numbers in the East and will become more of a problem in their interactions with humans.  He expects increases in the number of coyote attacks on humans in the East.

Talked about it taking him several months to finally kill the black coyote in the above photo.  He couldn't figure out how the coyote was getting into the farmers barn and killing his chickens.  So he talked the farmer into letting him hide in the hayloft and finally killed the coyote with a crossbow.

Entertaining guy.  Not much new here for me, but, hey, I'm always willing to listen to someone talk about hunting coyotes.  With my low success rate, I need all the help I can get!!

I've heard some not so good things about Mr. Bechdal's knowledge of coyotes.   But then, I've never met him, don't know him, and never heard him speak or read his book.   So I don't know if what I heard is true or not.

I do know that when it comes to hunting eastern coyotes, I can learn what I need to know from the good folks on FnF.

he has the basics down but there is some pretty off the wall things he says in his seminars and in his video.  I do not want to sway you opinion but go ahead and watch it once.  but just remember this one thing.  a few years ago he claimed that he killed 200 coyotes in pa.  now I do know that the hound hunters that hunt every weekend through the season do not come close to touching that.  he does it by calling.  and the story on killing 8 coyotes at a time back a few years ago came from the fact that he reloaded and killed that many of em not pups in some females gut.  his story changes a lot.  he was on a few reputable pro staff's.  if he was that good why isn't he still on there prostaff?  I am pretty sure that he was on primos at one time along with knight and hale and I think hunter specialties.  three big names in the biz.  I think he did pick up a sponser but cannot remember who it is at this time.  might be one of those big three yet who knows.

" Claimed he killed 200 coyotes in PA and 8 at one time while reloading......."      :nono:   I have no interest in Mr. Bechdal.    :nono:

But I bet someone comes on here and says "I believe".    :eyebrownod:

I would be real surprised if I found out Bechdal killed 10 coyotes in his life time. I believe it to be more like 3 two with a f-150 truck and 1 with his wife's olds 88.  :laf:

Edit to add "I believe" "I believe"  :roflmao: :roflmao:

Why not just ask Big George A if it's possible to kill 200 coyotes in a year in PA?

Maybe the guy was on FoxPro's Field Staff and hunting with Glenn Guess or PossumAl?   Heck, 12 at a time and guy could hit 200 pretty fast, and everyone knows Guess can call the crap out of them in PA.....

If he's called anything 200 times in a single year, it was a take out number
