Title: Stabilized Spalted Hackberry/Antler(Sold)
Post by: Yotehntr on November 22, 2009, 11:50:19 AM
I sent some Spalted Hackberry Off to get stabilized and got it back this weekend... This is the 1st call from it!  For those who aren't familiar with "stabilized" materials it's an expensive process... in this case I shipped the wood off and the folks put the wood in a chamber under some acrylic resin. ($100/gal) They pull a strong vacuum to remove all air from the wood and when the vacuum is released the resin is pulled into the wood replacing where the air had been.  They then heat the wood to 190 degrees to cure the resin.  You are left with materials that are a large percentage acrylic  :eyebrow:  They don't "need" a finish but I put one on anyway. The 1st pic is no finish just to show what I'm talking about.  Getting on to the call This is a Stabilized Spalted Hackberry barrel with an o-ring fitted antler toneboard.  This one is sold thanks for looking!

Without a finish!!!

With my CA finish,

Thanks guys! I'm real happy with the job he did on stabilizing, this was like balsa before the stabilizing and then at least as heavy as hedge when I got it back.  :eyebrow:

Amazing stuff Brad.
This is probably a stupid question, but is turned before or after the stabilization process?

Not a stupid question at all Jimbo. If this stuff wasn't so soft I'd love to stabilize it after it was turned (I get charged by the pound)  That would save some $ !  This was to soft to use before stabilizing, so after.

If Kerry is gona do this stabilizing thing ya oughta fill the other call makers in on him.  Kerry is a class act, and I would recommend business to him all day long.

With that said....... I toiled over buying this call for two days.  :madd: But I thought better since Christmas is around the corner and I'm looking for a new rifle.  :doh2:

Alls I can say is "Man, restraint sucks!!!!" Because thats a top notched beauty.

I left the picture on my screen for the wife to get the hint :innocentwhistle:.  When I got back in there was a picture of a crystal wine decanter on it :puke:.  That is pure unexcelled beauty in my humble opinion and I'm willing to bet it sounds as good as it looks :yoyo:.
