Title: Holes in hides after skinning
Post by: BigB on January 09, 2007, 08:47:57 PM
When is the proper time to sew up holes after you skin a fur?  Is it before or after fleshing?

Thanks.

After....just go careful around the holes so you don't tear them bigger then they already are.

Assume you are sewing cause you plan on selling the raw hide?

Haven't made up my mind if I want to sell it or maybe try tanning my first hide.

If your going to tan them, make sure you use a thread that will withstand the breaking process.
Like a waxed caped thread or similar.

 ya look confused there so I'll enlighten ya go to a taxadermy website and order a spool of thread for sewin capes up not all but alot will come as bowstring material for making bowstrings so its cheaper by far to just hit your local bowshop and buy a spool of bowstring than order special hide string dental floss works good to but I've had probs with knots slipping

That makes sense now  :eyebrownod:

I'm not a bowjunkie, but I thought the bow string was like ...really thick! So, what is it?....braided and covered on the bow?

lol its not even braided its a single strand of string looped around 2 points of a jig then the ends are "served" (served meaning a diff. type of string is used to wrap loops at each end to form the end points or loops) that attach to the limbs of the bow ... building your own strings is a heck of a lot cheaper than buying them and they aren't all that hard to build either
