Title: Revolutionary shotshell?
Post by: FinsnFur on December 27, 2009, 07:40:19 PM
Setting on Rick's crapper this afternoon before we went out to make a couple stands. There I sat with my pants down around my ankles minding my own business reading last months Predator Extreme when I had this brain fart. No seriously. :eyebrownod:

How come they dont make a shot shell with divitod shot inside?

Golfballs were given divots which greatly enhances their accuracy and speed.
MythBusters coated a car with clay and gave it divots, which proved to enhance it's gas mileage.

So what would be the outcome of a shot shell filled with divitod shot?

Or is there already such a thing? :doh2:

I think its a great Idea and should be tested..... :highclap: :highclap: :highclap:

If it dont work.....then you can blame where ya were when ya thunk it up.........($^!++/ Idea  :laf:)

hmmm.. sounds interesting and never heard of it before.  Black Cloud has a special shot but its not like a golf ball.

Would it increase bullet speed as well?  A bullet, with larger size and surface area,  would be easier to dimple.  I've never heard any of this before, but it is intriguing.

I'm not sure on the physics of this one but it is intriguing.  I'm thinking because of the size that dimples wouldn't make such a difference .

If I could have been able to came up with the word dimpled, I could have figured it out. I stumbled with the word divot. I was like....no that aint it, how do I describe this.

Now this become a whole new ball game :eyebrow:

Apparently AccurateShooter.com started a rumor that the US Government was actually testing this dimpled theory.
They put out the rumor on April 1st. :innocentwhistle:
They put a lot of work into this, graphic detailed images, and a full page of info on their site. :laf:
The article is here (http://accurateshooter.wordpress.com/2009/04/01/us-army-team-tests-radical-new-dimpled-bullet/)

Then they posted another article on the 10th of April commenting on how well the hoax went over :iroll:
They even have a list of forums that bought the hoax and were considered "fooled". Thanks god were not on that list :doh2:
This article is here (http://accurateshooter.wordpress.com/2009/04/10/dimpled-bullet-spoof-continues-to-fool-web-readers/).

Well.......so much for that idea. No wonder it happened on the crapper. :doh2:

You were in the wrong game Jim :eyebrownod:.  You know how it is to dimple your truck while out hunting but only a select few can divot it :innocentwhistle:.

Mr. Jim… it’s been done

Dimpled shotgun pellets: United States Patent 4173930
Dimpled shotgun pellets for use in a standard shotshell load (hunting or target; factory load or reloaded) in which the pellets are generally spherical in configuration with a plurality of concave dimples arranged on the outer surfaces thereof. The dimples may be arranged either symmetrically or asymmetrically on the outer pellet surfaces and result in an improvement in the aerodynamics of the individual dimpled pellets once they have left the muzzle of the shotgun.

It was still a dang good idea. I saw that episode of mythbusters and was amazed as well. I thought the clay would fall off for sure and then their results were mindboggling.
All great inventions took place in just such a manner. Well, not necessarily on the crapper, but you know what I mean.  :eyebrownod:

Someone needs to do something about steel shot........It sucks! and the alternatives are too$$$$

I do not see any reason we ourselves could not look into the dimples and the effects on ballistics.... Heck you could start by dimpling a BB and shooting it through a BB gun shooting a smooth one for control.

You can make an air cannon the size of a .20ga 0r a .12ga and run speed tests..... I really think this could have a dramatic effect on speed........Just dont know about performance.
