Title: Out for a spell...
Post by: Coulter on January 05, 2010, 09:12:08 AM
I'm out of commission for a little while as far as hunting and turning calls. I screwed up my left eye somehow. The only thing I can think of is while I was hunting on Sunday some snow blew into and I scatched it up. I don't know though. I had to go to the Doc yesterday as much as I didn't want to. He looked for any foreign objects and found none. Then he dyed my eye orange and used an ultraviolet light to detect scratches. His response...Whoa! You're whole eye is scratched up! He showed me in a mirror and yikes. He prescribed some drops to try and heal it, but it is still all swelled up and irritated. I have to go back tomorrow so they can check it for any progress. If they don't feel the drops are helping they will be sending me over to the eye doctor.

My son loves it... He keeps calling me Eegore and Cyclops! I'm gonna get him when I can see him better! Anyway just thought I'd post up what's happening...Bill take advantage of it and get yourself a coyote. I'll wait until at least this weekend to do anymore hunting. I am going again though...with one eye or two.

Coulter, sorry to hear that.  Man, that sounds like it hurts!  Trouble is, if you don't know exactly how you scratched it, to go back out in the same conditions may scratch it again.

I scratched my eyeball on the tip of a pine needle once and it hurt off and on for years.  A tiny torn flap kept coming loose again.  The doc told me that eyeball scratches from pine needles and fingernails don't heal well.

However you did it, take the time to LET IT HEAL or it can keep giving you grief.  Use the drops on time, try to go long periods with your eyes closed and relaxed.    Cover your eyes and get some recorded books to listen to through earphones!

The coyotes will still be there when you get well.  We are all a little competitive, but this BigB thing is purely for fun and will only stay fun if we keep it loose and relaxed.  We all azzled around for weeks before getting anything.  Eyes are serious.

^^^^^^^ That there is good advice. I wore an eye patch for the better part of 3 months. Kept rubbing my eye. NOT GOOD!! Do the best ya can to let it heal. Best way to do that is let your eye relax and not move around.

Coulter, I hate to hear that, get better soon!
A friendly little advice from an old one eyed coyote hunter:  If they are letting you drive, or while going up or down steps, be extra careful your depth perception will be off. Your other eye will adjust but it may take a while. And by all means take care of that eye, it's not something you want to be without... trust me.

That sucks!! I hit a 20d nail once & it came at me & stuck me in the eye. Scared the (Bops cell phone pics  :roflmao: ) outta me!! Had to wear the patch for 5 days. I think my toes are still numb. Take your Dr's advice. In the end you will be glad you did.  :yoyo: :yoyo:  Get well soon Steve!!

Our family doc is a quack...and I'm not just saying that. I've been trying to get my wife to switch for years. I usually see the nurse practitioner when I HAVE to go. It was funny yesterday I had to see him...and he was looking at my records. "Boy Steve, you haven't been in for quite a long time, since oh...'04". Really, it seems like just yesterday.

Anyway, I am following his advice as long as it doesn't interfere with hunting this weekend. Actually, the swelling around my eye has gone down quite a bit. It just burns, itches, and waters at this point. The swelling is there, but not nearly as bad. I have to go back in the morning, hopefully all is good and I can get back to being me with no eye patch thingys.

I know the BigB contest is for fun...and I won't push it to much. At least it wasn't my dominant eye, so I can still look down a scope. I can't sit still for too long with my eyes closed Clyde. I have to find something to do. Heck I even did dinner dishes tonight!. That is unheard of!

Jim...yes the dye did make everything from that eye look orange like I was looking out of a pair of orange sunglasses. It was really weird, yet pretty cool. I think they are going to do that again tomorrow to see if the drops are helping any.

Thank you everybody, I'm going to work on lanyards now since I can't work on the lathe and the dishes are done. Right after another drop in the eye that is.

Steve

:roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: Nice one Glen.

The original eye drops my family doc prescribed have been discontinued. He sent me to the Ophthalmologist yesterday and he looked it over. He "Thinks" it may be some kind of viral infection. So he has me taking two different eye drops now - an antibiotic and an anti-viral. One every 4 hours and the other every two. Stinkin' eye still feels like crap. This is getting very annoying, I have stuff to do. Anyway, I'll keep ya posted.

Steve

Yep.  And that's all the more reason to take care of the eyes.  This is obvious but every guy who drops dead of a heart attack today has stuff to do, and every guy who goes blind, etc.    Take care of your eyes, and do it right from the first.  All the stuff to do will still be there, or somebody else can do it.  If you lose your eyes you can't do it anyway.  I speak from experience.

My eyes felt kind of funny one day and when I looked in a mirror one of them seemed to be bulging out a little.  My work partner thought so too when I asked him.  Within a week my eyes were extended so far out that they were pushing out the lenses of my glasses.  Each day as I met doctors etc. I thought, "This is annoying.  I have things to do."  And then it began to sink in how serious it was.  I went blind in each eye totally for short spells, scary.  I never lost total vision in both eyes at the same time but as I went downhill I had to stop driving and did not drive again for 18 months.  My wife drove me till she got fed up with my disease induced anxiety and quit.  Friends drove me.  I tried to continue working from home.  We moved near the hospital.

I quit our family doctor when he showed he didn't have a clue about a case this complicated and specialized yet got mad at me when I insisted on a second opinion.  We learned that in serious stuff you have to manage your own illness and treatment . Doctors are too busy and have too many patients.  My wife came into appointments and kept a notebook with doc instructions and our questions each visit.

Five surgeries and three years later I  was not back to normal but am close enough.  Stuff I'd had to do when I got sick was either long forgotten, in storage or still there for me to do, and do better.

Yep, its a sermon.  Take care of your eyes, Bro!

Hey Steve, did you start this topic from a cell phone?

I'm trying to figure out how the little cell phone doo hickey became your post icon when that image isnt listed anywhere for you to choose it.

I'm not a very safety conscience guy - except when it comes to my eyes.  Take care and follow the doctors instructions.

Well, I don't think I'll be doing anything for a bit yet...no hunting or turning anyway. I hear ya Clyde and advice well taken since my eye doesn't appear to be getting any better yet, even with all of the drops.

Jim, yeah I probably started this topic at work on my break. They don't like me using the internet for this type of stuff at work, but they can't trace it if I do it from my phone.  :innocentwhistle: Gotta love the little Blackberry

Well, I have to get ready for work. It will be lanyards only for a little while for me.

Steve
