Title: This morning
Post by: JohnP on January 20, 2010, 07:53:44 PM
I don't remember if I mentioned it or not but my calling partner of the last several years accepted a job offer in Iraq so I am in need of a new partner.  Then last night another hunting buddy came by for a celebratory drink on the MA win and had his 28 year old son with him who just came back from Afghanistan. We got to talking and he mentioned that he would like to give calling a try and would I like to go out in the morning.  Told him about my feet and that I couldn't walk more than 2 or 3 yards without excruciating pain. He replied no problem you just tell me where you want to sit and I'll drive right to it, tell me where to place the caller and where you want me to sit. So this morning we went out for a couple of stands.  Our first stand was just below the crest of a rather steep two track I made myself comfortable while he drove to the bottom and set the caller out then he drove back up and sat on the opposite side of me, he watched the north ravine and I the south ravine.  About 5 minutes into pup in distress this guy showed up.  Coming up my side of the wash he stopped behind a bush and just stayed there for a while.  He then decided "no I better not go any further" turned around and was headed back down the way he came but in no big hurry.  I switched to a bird call and he stopped turned around and started back.  He stopped again behind the same bush but had his head showing which resulted in this:

We drove about another mile on the two track and found another spot that looked inviting.  He asked if I had any handcalls as he wanted to give that a try.  I told him that I had a call made from a superb craftsman that went by the name of Hawk Feather and that he could give it a try.  He never seen a open reed call before and had no idea on how to use it so I suggest the closed reed.  Well you know how these youngsters are they take no advice at all. He got to wailing on that open reed and it was all I could do to keep from laughing out loud.  Until I heard the shot, looked down in the wash and saw this:

Said he wanted to go again tomorrow.

I've about done the same think Mr john. After the shot my buddy says "ya just never know what they might come to". There I sit all puzzled and thinking ... yeah, ya got that chit right

As always, great story and pictures. I'm glad to see your getting out some. That is some beautiful country you hunt out there. Wished we had some like it here! We will be watching for your next report ... and don't make it seem so easy for the new feller, might just spoil him,
