Title: Mozilla and PDF files
Post by: msmith on January 21, 2010, 08:11:48 PM
Being computer stupid, for some reason I cannot get PDF files to open with mozilla firefox. If I need to open one, I copy the link and paste it into IE. I tried to download a pdf add on, but it shows that I already have it. Any suggestions?

Thanks

you need an "addon" me thinks! From Firefox tool bar select tools then addon and do a search to get the adobe reader addon!

Uhh. While you were replying, I downloaded PDFescape add on. Works good. I had the Adobe plug in, but it did not let me open pdf websites.

I'm good to go for now I think. Thanks!

PDF (Portable Document Format)

First off there is no such thing as a pdf website...not that I know of anyway.
PDF formatted files, are files with the actual pdf extension such as myfile.pdf, The extension being the last three characters in that file name.

To open a PDF file you must have Acrobat Reader (http://get.adobe.com/reader/) installed on your computer one way or another. I say one way or another because I'm not sure if FireFox offers an addon that allows them to be opened with the browser or not....never looked to be honest.

PDF files were brought about to create a file or a document that will retain all it's font's, colors and layouts, itself and still display that way when sent to other networks and or computers.
How many times have you created something in Word® or Office®, or some other document creating program only to find it doesnt display the way you created it too, on the office PC?

PDF files will.

PDF files are commonly used for forms, schedules, pricing sheets. brochures, flyers, etc. Things that are created and must retain their original integrity, structure and format no matter what pc they are displayed on. Thats also why they are widely used on the internet in registration forms. Hundreds of different people and machines can access or download the document and translating, or converting programs to make it compatible with all machines would be way too cumbersome.

To create pdf files you need Adobe Acrobat.

I've been using FF for a year or so now & I've opened PDF files all along.  I also download any recommended updates. Might that be the difference in some of us opening those & others not being able to??

Like I said, I am computer stupid. All I know is that when using IE and I would click on a link that had a pdf extension, it would open and I could look at it. Not so when using firefox.    After downloading the add on pdf escape, I can not only view them but edit them on my computer. I beleive I have the latest verson of Acrobat, but not sure.
