Title: Having a good day.
Post by: pitw on February 26, 2010, 11:29:35 PM
Started out the day by going to Unity where a tannery is located.  Dropped of a moose and deer hide.  Then wandered around looking at this stuff.

Coolest machine in the world.

Barry, pretty cool!  Correct me if I am wrong?  But your first photo is of a machine that measures and determines the square footage of the hides as they pass through it.  I've never seen one in person.  Saw a similar one in operation on a television program one time.

Stopped by Hals to drop off an elk hide for him to turn into whatever he wants.  He was just taking a batch of hides out to put on the drying table to make rawhide.
These little units are sure handy.

Cool pics Barry!

We use to service the equipment at one of the tannerys that made the skins for Wilson sporting goods for baseballs and footballs. Man, You talk about corrosive stuff!! That chemical they use would destroy anything metal! Didnt smell very well either!

I didnt even see that one LOL...
I sold the fleshing wheel to Rick223,  Todd. Actually he sold it to me...and then when I closed my doors in 2008 I sold it back to him.

How does it work. Slicker then owl snot to be honest.
They are sharpened with an edge almost as precision as a razor blade. But you could slap your hand on the edge of the blade while it's running and not cut yourself. The edge is actually rolled to one side during manufacturing.
Therefore the fleshing takes place by pulling the hide across the blades edge, left to right. The guards on each side keep the hide from getting pulled in, cause it will pull.
The further back you set the guards, the thicker of a layer it shaves.
On a wheel that size your actually shaving a strip about 3 to 4 inches wide at a time.

Those things are the cats.. :innocentwhistle:..
