Went coyote hunting with my uncle today but only being allowed to hunt the fields again till turkey season the dogs hung up on us twice howling just inside the woods and no shots were fired.
So we went looking for our cave where a bear sleeps in the winter months and it was iced over so bad I could not get near it to climb down for fear of the ice falling with me.
But we had a great time hunting and looking for some wood to take back with us....
This is where my great aunts two story home used to stand........

This is one of several buildings still left and some of the stuff is still inside....

They timbered recently and we were after dead wood only......

We headed toward the bear den for some pics and this was as close as I could get till it warms up outside.....
In the bottom left of the pic ya can see some of the top edge of the ice on the far side....where I was it was so steep I was hanging from a tree with one hand just to get this sorry pic.... :laf:

We opted for some safer ground...

We cut some samples with the bow saw ...

It all looks good but no ATV today so we packed what we could over a mile on our backs...... :whew:

Then on the way home we stopped at the church graveyard where they buried my other uncle back in Oct. to fix up his grave and ready it for setting the headstone.....

Pat there is still some mason jars in that old seller with and without the fruit still in em.....this place has been in my family for over 100 years and I fear it lost someday....I have found jars and bottles in the other barn worth over $100 each though I would never give em up..... :nono:
neat pics. Thanks for sharing.
That cedar is awesome......no sap wood and it seems harder than some I have turned......
Al, that is really neat. :highclap:
I like exploring old places like that. You should consider writing down or video recording all the history you can find (or already know) about the old home place. It would be a loss if it's family history faded away over time.
Well I dont know a lot of the details and many died with my mom and my grandma..........
But the old house which once stood here......I have pics of it somewhere....
Used to have a very large open second floor that housed a bunch of paper work from my great uncles printing business.
Near as I could tell that business was handed down to him.......Many of the papers that was stored in the old home were documenting surveys done by George Washington.
Old fliers advertising special events and such. It was COOL to go through it all and see how things were different back then however this stuff did not belong to me, It belongs to my cousin now.....Who thought it best to lock it in the old house for safe keeping.
A so called "Hunt Club" decided they were gonna post the property as their own once and broke into the house......they peeled the metal roof off one section and were using it as a tree stand letting it rain inside when they were gone. :argh:
Some of the old papers survived and we fixed the roof and after an ANGRY confrontation.........we threw the hunt club OUT and removed the posted signs ....some were even nailed to the house...... :rolleye:
In retaliation we fear some of the so called Members burnt the old house to the ground! With the nearest fire truck over an hour away......the old papers and timber went up like a match.........Many years of history .......Gone.......Cause someone never took the time to ask permission to hunt...... ........If they had been nice it would not have been a problem to let them hunt as long as they let us hunt them.......So goes it.........One ruins it all for everyone and much pain and suffering for the loss of great things........I am now the only one allowed to hunt it as well as my uncle.
I have some old boards from the house my cousin gave me.......but those cool old printings were all lost......
Some of my family on my mothers side are honored in a local museum in Pt. Pleasant.......and as much as could be has been documented there........I will make the trip someday and show ya a little about it.
Thats sad, people just have no respect anymore.
BTW I cant believe you dont have any snow. We havent seen the ground since first week of December here.
It finally melted off a couple of days ago...... :whew:
