Title: New 4H calves showed up.
Post by: pitw on March 12, 2010, 06:34:06 PM
Got a call from a friend who has a quality herd of Simmentals today and he said they had too many calves do to twins being born and would I take a couple.  Seeing as I always take calves and these were quality livestock the wife and I figured since we will have two boys in 4H next year that these would fit that bill nicely.  Here is some pics of the new animals and there handlers.

One with the calf[Oreo] we got last just to show how it has grown.

Donny's took to the nipple like it had been doing it his whole life.

A shot of some of the remaining turkeys that aren't allowed in the contest. :holdon:

That's purdy cool Barry!! It looks like the other calf needed a little help on the nipple tho. And Oreo is giving the new neighbors the old "What the hey are they doing in my crib??!!" look.  :laf: :laf:

How big are the turkeys?? 20-25lbs??

HaMeR we ate a turkey on Sunday out of that group that dressed 23lbs so you are close.  "Jim" is the runt though. :laf:

Nice looking calves, are they pure Semmentals or Hereford cross?  Cows, bulls or steers to be?  Did you know that the Canadians were the first to introduce this breed to the US?  I'm sure the kids will do well with their 4H project.

His herd is not pure bred but of good quality and yes there is Hereford in them and possibly some Red Angus.  Canadians have always tried to find ways of getting a good carcass done in a short time as we can't just turn critters out on grass for two years to let them grow.  The calves were bulls but are now steers as we find doing the neutering early is easiest on all concerned[got my nose broke the first time as a 12 year old by letting go of the back leg of a three hundred pound calf I was supposed to be holding and then reaching up to get it again. I did get it :doh2:] Thanks for the vote of confidence on the boys.

Great looking calves and turkeys. 4-H used to be really big here, I won a lot of trips, but it has pretty much died out over the years. One of those pigs wouldn't have been named "Doc " would it ?
