Title: Got a good deal .....
Post by: coyote101 on March 27, 2010, 12:26:17 AM
 ....on this little package:

A New England Firearms Handi Rifle in .357 magnum with the Survivor stock and forearm. It came with a sling, bi-pod and a full box of ammo, in a Pelican 1700 hard case.

But the most attractive feature was this Leupold Mark 4 CQ/T scope.

The scope functioned fine optically, but the illumination feature didn't work. So I sent it to Leupold for repair. In less than two weeks it came back to me in perfect working condition, with a new battery pack. Total cost of repair.......zero dollars! Thank you Leupold.

I think I am going to mount the scope on my AR. It is 1-3X14mm with an illuminated circle dot reticle and I think it should be great for coyotes at the ranges I am typically hunting.

I'll probably sell the rifle unless I can locate a barrel in a caliber more useful to me. After I shoot it of course.

Pat

Nice gun, Pat.  I have no idea what its worth so I wouldn't know a good deal if I saw it.   :laf:

Semp,

The rifle is probably only worth $125 - $150. The pelican case sells new for over $150 and used for $100 or so.  The CQ/T scopes list for around $1000, but can be found online new for around $800, and typically sell used on ebay in the $625 - $650 range. None of this is new, but I paid a LOT less than the value of the scope for the whole package.

Around here there were guys (under the age of 21) who would buy a .357 rifle so that they could legally buy ammo for their .357 pistols.  How they got the pistols, being under 21, was a question I never asked, but I knew the ones that had the rifle and when they would come into the gun shop and want to buy .357 ammo they always said that it was for their rifle.  Several of the .357 rifles were sold to others under 21 when the person turned 21 and could legally purchase ammo that was made to fit a pistol.

We had a few cowboys, real cowboys not city boy wannabes, that would hire on during roundup and branding season.  A few of them would have either a .357, 44Mag or 45Colt pistol strapped on with a rifle of the same caliber in their scabbard.  Those that had same caliber weapons would work the border area of our lease.  In case they got in "trouble" they didn't have to worry about grabbing the wrong size ammo for their firearms.

I actually see something about that on TV John. Discovery channel.
It must have been pretty common back then

Cool new toy Pat. It must have a good heavy barrel on it also, cause from here it looks like a shot gun barrel.

A $1000 piece of glass on a $200 rifle? Usually it's the other way around. :laf:

Pat, you might be real surprised how well that Handi-Rifle shoots. I have two of the NEF's (243 & 30-30) and a H&R Ultra HB (223). All three are very accurate and handy little gems. For the price they also make great "stick it in the truck" guns.

Have to agree with Chet. a 357 rifle behind the seat of the truck is a nice thing.
