After an unsuccessful morning gobbler hunt, I switched gears and pulled my .19 Calhoon out of the truck late in the afternoon. [In PA you cannot hunt chucks till after "noon" during Spring Gobbler season]. My friend Mike and I were hunting his dad's farm (remember Leon). We had climbed up into the "Palace" tree stand and were surveying the big field. Mike had brush hogged it the day before and was recalling all the chucks he saw while running the tractor. -It was supposed to be pay back time!
Well, long story short, it did not pan out in the way of chucks this day. Mike spotted this one running the edge of the hedgerow about 140 yards out. After bickering back and forth on who to take the shot, (I wanted Mike to shot it, and he me vice versa. LOL!) he insisted that I have the honors. -Can't beat a friend like that! So I chambered up a round in the .19 Calhoon and started looking for the chuck. [The .19 Calhoon is a neat little round. It's formed by running a .22 Hornet case through a neck sizer die. Then fireforming the case to create a shoulder]. I was using a 32 grain Double HP Calhoon bullet loaded atop some VV-120 powder. Chronographed right at 3300 Fps... Well when I finally located the chuck, he had worked his way about 30 yards closer. Standing on it's hind legs it was looking directly in our direction. So I centered the crosshairs on it's chest and touched one off.. Whap!!! The chuck collapsed out of sight. Mike was observing through his binos, and said, "Done Deal!" LOL! About an hour later his son showed up on the tractor, planning on mowing the bottom portion of the field. So our chuck hunting was done for the day. All in all, a good day! And on the freshly mowed fields a promise of another day!

Thanks for the picture and story. I have yet to see a ground squirell on our property. I may have killed them all last year! I have a friend out here who kills coyotes with a .19Calhoon. I don't think he has ever had one run on him, if'n i was to get another coyote rifle I think that is what I would get.

Nice shot. How do you like the Calhoon bullets? I have looked at them several times, but never got any to shoot.

Good looking hog Dave and a great way to spend some unproductive turkey time :congrats:. If them are the same double hollow point calhoons I use they are awesome but at around 4,000fps they have a tendency to come apart a mite :innocentwhistle:.
I never even heard of a 19, but I'm just a kid :shrug:

HaMer, I believe the .19 Badger is based off a .30 Carbine case. It's about the same OAL as the .221 Fireball.

I'm getting about 4100 Fps with the .19-.223 Calhoon with a 32 grain bullet!
My Calhoon's are two of the most accurate varmint rifles I own. Alot of that credit comes from the Pac Nor Super Match barrels Calhoon uses. Check out his website http://www.jamescalhoon.com/ He even posted an old photo of "HuntnCarve" and his son with a couple of long range chucks we got a long time ago. LOL! So yeah, I'm a fan of his products! LOL!
