GREENE COUNTY, Ind. (AP) - The Department of Natural Resources has confirmed the presence of a mountain lion in southern Indiana.

DNR official Gary Langell says it's impossible at this point to tell whether the animal sighted in rural Greene County is wild or a formerly captive cat.

A DNR biologist investigating a reported sighting of the cougar used motion-sensitive trail cameras to photograph it last weekend.

The confirmation is the first since the DNR implemented a new policy March 1 to evaluate reported sightings of the animal. Another mountain lion was confirmed in late 2009 in Clay County.

The DNR says the last documented case of a wild mountain lion in Indiana is believed to have been recorded between 1850 and 1865.

Those are cool pictures, unusually clear.  I never get over the marvel at the size of their tails.  It looks like they must have baited the cat to the spot with something specific to cougars.  Wonder what they used?  Catnip?  Cougar urine?

It took the Indiana DNR years to even say, ok maybe there is something in them hills. We will take a look. Less than 2 months and they have photographic proof.

Sometimes the DNR just dont listen

Wow, those are great pics. I'm surprised the DNR fessed up so soon. Ours would still be denying it.

Looks like a well fed lion.  I believe there are more lions out there and in more states than the game departments realize.  I live in a lion rich state and we see very few of them so I can imagine how hard it is to see one in a state with a low population.
