Title: Can't forget Weedwalker!!
Post by: HaMeR on May 23, 2010, 04:11:03 PM

104 loaded coal cars being pulled by 3 engines. We got to the crossing just as the engines passed & I couldn't tell if all 3 were running or not. It was on flat ground so I'm not sure.

It depends on how big the engines were if they needed all 3 to be running. Different sized engines are rated to pull a certain amount of weight. 2 big engines will pull 104 loaded coal cars on flat ground. Sometimes in the hills they use a pusher engine on the rear to help them over a hill. And a lot of times they drag around a dead engine to drop off at a shop somewhere. But sooner or later...............they all come by me.

No caboose or pusher on this one Ed. Just the 3 at the front. Hope you're doing well.  :yoyo: :yoyo:

Back when I was in the coal business, we usually figured 100 tons of coal per rail car.  I think they may load them a little heavier today.

That's a lotta coal!! Some of those were loaded just to where you could barely see the coal & others were loaded way full.
