Ok Folks I am thinking ahead God help us :laf:
In the past I have put a couple deer calls in the loot pot for the deer contest and the toughest thing is picking out the kind of wood I will make them out of,and always wondered if this is the wood the contestants would pick if they were to order one.
This year I decided I would let the members of the board pick the wood That is if we have a deer contest
Deer season is only 3 months away and it is never to early to start thinking about it
What I would like from you are some choices, post the name of the wood you would like to see used on the deer calls and the 3 most suggested I will put in a poll and then you board members can vote on it.
Doesn't matter is not a choice here because I don't know where to get that kinda wood
Deer antler is not a choice because it is to hard to find big enough pieces to make 2 deer calls
Thank you for your participation
Bill
Careful Bill. A set from Amboyna could be hazardous to the purse. I found that out when I went to the wood store with Coulter. My neck hurt for 3 days from >> :shock2: !! :laf: :laf: I like Kingwood & Bocote.

I disagree again :iroll:
  :doh2: :innocentwhistle: :corn:
I have done a set from king wood already but not bocote
Barry you would :laf:
Yes he would....I can see it coming. :eyebrownod:
You better figure out if you can go through with it real quick. :laf:
I actually think they'd be kinda cool :eyebrow:
I like most of the burls: Walnut, Maple, Afzelia, & Amboyna, . I am also in the process of turning some wine stoppers using Tulip and I forgot how much I like that wood. Nice grain and patterns in it. It is hard to pick just one.
Jerry
Last Year I made them out of fancy Walnut
I have turned some tulip wood and it does make some nice looking calls
There are some nice suggestions here.
If I can find deer antler or if some one has some that could be bought/got for this project I will put it on the list
I need 2 pieces 4 inches long 1 1/2 inches in dia. fairly straight and 2 pieces 3 inches long 1 1/8 in dia
Thanks
Bill
Amboyna Burl, Desert Iron wood, and Snakewood. :eyebrow:
Seriously, I like woods with character, grainy wood, contrasting sapwood etc.
I've never used any of it but I always like the looks of box elder burls that have been dyed.
John
Hmmmm  I dunno  I have a hard enough time deciding what kind of wood I want to play with next. :wo: I'm thinking maybe I should rephrase that :doh2:
As it seems right now we have Amboyna Burl, and antler (If I can find it) making the list right now
This is what I will do I will keep asking for suggestions until the 16th of June and then we will poll it and if antler comes out on top I will do my best to make them out of antler If I fail on that attempt then what ever comes in 2nd is the winner
This is tougher then a hefty trash bag :laf:
Keep the suggestions coming
Bill,
I have really been looking for just the right piece of wood for you to get and I think I have found it. Glimer Wood has a piece of Blackheart Makamong Burl. This is from S.E. Asia and is also called Afzelia Burl. This is similar to Amboyna Burl but has more of a brownish-orange color. It is very stable and will take a fine polish. #W21830, 2" x up to 31" x up to 36 1/2" which should be enough to make a couple dozen calls. You might need to hurry since it is on sale right now for the unbelievable price of just $760.00. Make sure you buy it quickly so that someone like Glen doesn't think it would be a steal for making some pens.
Jerry
Thanks for looking Jerry :alscalls: I think I will go to my banker and see if the Money is available :nono:
That Afzelia Burl looks almost like the old leather top on those big desks the way it cracks. Man is that stuff nice to work with. For JUST under $800 Bill you better hurry!! I doubt it will last much longer. :nono:
Oh BTW. If'n you have any scraps left from it I know where you can dump drop it off at too. :innocentwhistle:
Yeah Jerry could prolly make me a wine bottle stopper :alscalls:
Maybe even more than one.
Jerry
:laf: :laf:
I'm fond of cedar but I cant get out of the duck blind long enough to pick up my bow.
Cedar I have
Vic it sounds as thought you should take the bow with ya duck hunting and when your done you could stalk a deer :laf:
1 more day here get your suggestions in
I have a lead on some deer antler ,so it does make the list
