Title: Opinions Please
Post by: LogsToLumber on June 16, 2010, 01:13:57 PM
A friend of mine turned this from my Honduran Rosewood Burl and I said we would ask opinions - warned him they might not all be favourable.

New member - we do a bit of collecting calls (no hunting unfortunatley). My clients sometimes trade me calls etc for material.

In general I like the style of the call. The grain in that piece of wood is like looking at a bikini model  :eyebrow:
even though you looked once you don't mind at all looking 2,3 or even 4 more times  :laf:  :yoyo:

Is that a 2 piece call kinda looks like it
How long is the call, and what type of finish was used on the call

In my opinion I would like to see a deeper lanyard groove.
Not sure if the streaks towards the top are from not sanding enough there or if it is from the finish

All in all pretty good job
Thanks for sharing

Welcome aboard LtL!   I've done some business with you in the past. (bought that very type of wood) Have to say I was very happy with the purchase! (for any that may be interested)  You'll be giving us here a 10% discount right???

I like the over all shape of your buddies call there.  Looks like a friction polish finish by the lines Bill mentioned.  Tell him to keep at it... practice makes... well more calls.

Welcome to Fins and Fur.  One thing that you needed to be warned about is if you want "canned" praise, you probably came to the wrong place.  You gave the guy what looks like an excellent piece of wood.  I have turned a few pieces of Rosewood Burl and it does make a beautiful call.  I do like the general shape of the call.  I also agree with Bill about the lanyard groove.  I am not wild about the opening between the mouthpiece and the call body, but I am only looking at a picture.  I am a bit of a finish nut and the call maker needs to work on his finishing.  That being said, I have some early calls where the finish resembles this.  My assumption is that the lean in the picture is just that - an uneven picture and not the call sitting on a flat surface with a lean like that.  Last, what does the inside of the bell look like?

Again, welcome.

Jerry

It looks like a $20 call made from a $50 piece of wood.

Purdy piece of wood!     What kind of call is it?

And I gotta say....... Why in the heck would you want calls if ya aint gonna use em?    :laf:

I think the wood is cool, and the over all design is very cool.
It's tough to tell from the picture, but it looks like there's tool marks showing near the top of the body, and the accent rings appear to be bled, or very uncrisp.

Love the wood and like the design. But tool marks are showing. One of the hardest things to learn how to get rid of. And reburning the accent rings before the finish sanding will improve the look .

If it wasn't so dang hot that would almost make me want to go out to the shop and turn something,  :eyebrownod: Jimmie

Thanks folks we will pass on info. This is only his 4th call so he will appreciate the advice.
To answer the questions:

Bills Custom Calls - I like the bikini analogy - its is a 2 piece call - 5 5/8" long - not sure what he finished it with - the streaks definitely are a finishing issue

Yotehntr - thanks for your business - we have set up a 10% discount for the forum members. Use code FINSANDFUR

Hawks Feather - Will pass on your advice - yes we did lean the pic a bit

alscalls - he called it an Arkansas style

FinsnFur - Will pass on your advice

So you can call Arkansas with it?
Or Arkansas Ducks?  :laf: :laf:

Tell him I wish my 4th call were at least that good......

But I know someone is still hunting with it somewhere.... :eyebrownod:

Only the ones who have been here over a couple of months.      I was beginning to think that you had started to take a fancy to rings.

I'd say for his forth call he is doing pretty darn good.  The wood is out of this world, for sure. I kinda like the over all look as far as my own appeal, but wouldn't be pushed away as a potential customer if the mouth piece was a bit different either.

Like others have mentioned it would be beneficial to see both ends of the calls to see how they are done, and if possible place a ruler in the pics if your just asking for input. They help those trying to help your buddy, better assess the call etc.

Tell him he is on the right track.

Gosh, I hate to do this again, but I'm gonna have to agree with Todd. If this is your buddies fourth call, well this guy is going to be one of the greats. There isn't but a handful of great call makers and this guy will surely be added to the list if he keeps it up. I have seen a bunch of them that have been at it for awhile that can't compare to his craftsmenship.
I have gotten calls from guys that have been doing it for awhile that the reeds needed tuned bad, the call would come apart when you didn't want it too, the reed would fall out, all kinds of stuff.

The rings don't bother me at all. It could use a little more polishing as it is a little dull for that beautiful of a wood. I agree with the assessment on the lanyard groove as well.
If that bad boy sings to the predators will be the number one thing. It would be nice to be able to see if the inside was finished as well.

He is well on his way, but with all things, practice will perfect it. I would also suggest he listen to some of these guys that have been doing it a long time, like Hawksfeather, Huntncarve, THO, Yotehntr, North Bay calls and others on this board. They can really make a call sound and look like a work of art or masterpiece.

One more thing. If you aren't going to hunt with them, get some in the hands of these boys that can really hunt coyotes, like CCP, Coyotehunter1, Weedwalker, Possumal and others, so they can let you know if you are on the right track with your sounds. A call that doesn't sound like it needs to sound is just a fancy piece of firewood.

Best of luck to ya.
