Title: hey Slag == Cam chain tensioner
Post by: KySongDog on July 04, 2010, 04:37:49 PM
After reading about Slag's scoot taking a dump, I figured I'd better check the cam chain tensioners on my Ultra.  I've got 40,000 miles on the bike and never looked at them.  They are notorious for wear in older twin cams.

After wrestiling with the exhaust, this is what I found:

That is the outer one.  Not too bad at all.  Should go another 20,000 I think.   The inner tensioner looked equally as good.  So time to button it back up.......... tomorrow.

Canon SD1100 IS  Power Shot.   I really like this camera.  Fits in your pocket.  It is very fast on startup and quick to take a second picture.

yeah, I've been meaning to check it for quite awhile now.  After seeing your thread about your bike, I thought now was as good a time as any.   Some guys say there chain tensioners wear out after as little as 20,000 miles.  Mine is an '06 which was the last year for the old style chain tensioners.  The newer bikes have hydraulic adjusted tensioners with a roller chain and are supposed to be a much better set up.  Less maintenance.

The two shoulder surgeries I've had has limited my riding time so I don't have as many miles as I normally would have.

My '05 Road King has 25,000 miles on it, and I replaced the cam tensioners on it a couple of months ago.  I upgraded to the hydraulic tensioners so I don't have to worry about them for a long time.

Wanna see something funny - go to the grocery store and buy a bag of white rice.  Sprinkle some on the ground below one of those foreign bikes.  And when the owner comes around, tell him that his bike is leaking.   :alscalls:  :alscalls:

I just had to Razz Semp and Slag alittle. (and now BigB)

Havent owned a bike in 12 years now but was an avid rider all the years prior. Mostly FZR 1000’s and now Iam to old, fat and out of shape to be riding those type bikes any more.

I did however have many friends with Hardly’s and they used to rag the heck out of me about my rice burners. I would just laugh and continue helping then work on theirs. I knew deep down they had rather be out riding than drinking beer and working on their bike. Or maybe that was the connection they had to their bike, lots of memories hanging out at the shop drinking with the boys working on their bikes.Or outside the bar admiring each others bike.

Just razzin you guys again I will admit the VRSCA V-Rod caught my eye back in 2002 and I almost signed away on the doted line.
