Where the [L] are the Mariana Islands and how come we have them on the back of quarters now?

up to the early 20th century sometimes called Ladrones Islands, from Spanish Islas de los Ladrones meaning "Islands of Thieves")
They are south of Japan and north of New Guinea, and immediately to the east of the Philippine Sea.

Lot of fighting in the Marianas in WWII. Saipan, Tinian, Guam are among those islands, now under US protectorate or something like that. The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot is what came to my mind, when US Navy planes shot down so many Japanese carrier planes. I checked and it was 429 Japanese planes lost to 29 US, on June 19, 1944. Tinian was close enough to allow US planes from there to bomb Tokyo, and that's where the atomic bomb planes were based.
I've been sick and my throat hurt so bad that I gave up on trying to sleep at 3:00 AM this morning and took some medical ice cream to soothe the pain.
