Title: Question for the fellow gear heads
Post by: FinsnFur on August 17, 2010, 08:13:17 PM
I'm amazed at how many parts places there are online now. It's awesome

I've been tinkering with 77 F150 that I dumped all that cash into the motor a while back. Mainly cause it's really hard on it to be setting, and also cause the tranny is out of the Windstar at the moment.

I'm playing with the chassis electrical. I managed to rig things together several years ago when the directional switch proved faulty in the steering column.
But now I'm going to pull the wheel again, replace that harness, and the chassis harness from the column back.

What I cannot find, is the actual  box (pickup box) wiring assembly. Which would be from the box to the chassis. All it amounts to is three wires to the left rear, three wires to the right rear, and a plug to plug the box into the chassis harness. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about if you been there.

Any of you fellow gear heads got some bookmarks or favorites that I may not....that you use for parts?

I just bought the steering column harness from Autopartsdeal.com for $30.00 bucks :eyebrow: Them things are close to a hundred at parts houses or the dealer.

It runs......Ohhhhhh have mercy does it run :eyebrownod: :eyebrow:

This wiring assembly is only going to be the same for 75 to 78 F150's if I remember right.

I will keep my eyes and ears open I do get some leads on things like that

Well a guy should be able to buy one somewhere. I'm not expecting ya to start following Dave and Mike around while they are out pickin.

LMC has them but they arent suited for each truck, it's a universal hunk of [Sanford and Son] which means have fun modifying it.

My dad was kinda Sanford so I come across these things often I didn't know you were needing parts or I would have asked before I got rid of it so I am not really going out of my way for ya

Did ya try ebay

Shoot Jim, your doing better then me. I unhooked the battery a few weeks ago to fix a wind shield tank motor, and now the darn suburban just randomly honks every once in a while, even when your driving it.  :innocentwhistle: :alscalls:

Even in the middle of the night? :laf:
Does that have a computer in it, can ya get codes?

I'm guessing the computer needs to be reset if it has one.
These dang computers are even teaching these vehicles how to compensate for, carb build up, dirty intakes, etc. Disconnect the battery on one with a dirty intake and the vehicle forgets how to run because it resets itself and thinks the intake is clean. And it will run like crap until you clean the intake :doh2:

So did you find one or am I to go looking .  If so do you want the wire right from the back of the frame to the steering wheel .
Title: Re: Question for the fellow gear heads
Post by: FinsnFur on August 18, 2010, 07:37:26 PM
I looked a little bit this morning some more and never did find one, no.
"The wire"...as you put it, from that back of the frame to the steering wheel, is really going to be more then "a wire". Thats actually a chassis harness and will have anywhere from 6 to 10 wires.
I didn't find one and wasnt really looking cause I figured I'd never find one. Kinda planned on rigging my own.
Actually I did find one or two if I remember right, and they were not OEM, which meant there would be nothing the same as far as coordinating wire colors to match up.
Plus they werent accompanied with a half moon pin plug, which is what comes off the steering column of all 70's F series pickups and broncos.
If you think you got one, hell yah, give me a price...that would save me about three hours of laying under the truck, taking a reading with the test light and then crawling to the back to see where it goes :laf:

What I was initially looking for in this thread though was the little wire harness, or wire assemble that actually plugs the pickup box into this chassis.
It's basically 5 foot wide, tail light wires on each end, and a plug in the middle to plug it into the chassis harness. It's what anyone would have to deal with if ever taking the box off or putting a box on a pickup.

Why didn't you originally say the wire harness for the tail lights to chassis wire .  I'll go look and see if I can find one quick.  I'll also check with two fellers in the morning who are dinosaurs and work on old Fords.   I doubt you'll like the price in Canuck funds .

Yeah, I guess there were no pictures, was there. :laf:

Oh and from what I've seen   Canuck funds wont be a problem, actually it might be for you if you find one, cause you'll actually get paid, regardless of your Canuck fund price

I spent 4 hours talking a fellow(more of a listen) about nothing and got him to give me the wiring from a truck his buddy rolled in 78.  It is a 74 though and I just checked the thread and it says I need 75 :doh2:.  I'll be looking tomorrow again now .

Well that was fun :innocentwhistle:.  I phoned the guy who has land 1/2 a mile North of where I spent 4 hours last night and asked if I could steal a part off an old Ford truck left on his property by a fellow in a little financial trouble 10-20 years ago.   I was told, "Only if you take the whole truck" :laf: :laf:.  I then went with help to see if it met the stringent requirements of the proposed mission.  I found this in the bush.

With this identification tag.

With which I deduced it was a Ford  :readthis:

Then I had the helper
(http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh145/pitw75/Forum%20Pics/IMG_3243.jpg)

Figure out the year to 1977 :whew:.
So we proceeded to tearing and ripping[heavy on the ripping{I love ripping}] in order to get this out.

After I sent said helper home for one more tool I had forgot, :doh2: with my smokes on the dash :pout:, I got everything loose that I could without cutting the wires for the one bolt i needed the wrench for :whew:.  Tool showed up and used the wrench to remove last bolt.
So we could leave the truck looking like this.

Now under this end of that plywood on the ground was a hornets nest and they didn't like you getting on the plywood .  They also liked the flowers on them little bush's by the bumper.  They were cool as they let us go about our business pretty much alone .

It's a good thing you didn't really need the wires around the steering wheel column :thumb2:.

She was a local truck from day 1.

Lost a little blood[more to the mosquitos]

Tool put the wire in a box and they are now on their way to your house[Maybe] :sad3:

Is this the right end

Thanks for the opportunity to go enjoy and evening with the funniest person I know alive[I got a couple dead buddies that are pretty funny :innocentwhistle:].  The chance to obtain a "New" truck from a fellow who most think is a bit of a [locust thorn can do this] but because I communicate I get to hunt and do neat things like this.

I gotta go make a living now :pout: :pout:

Well, were halfway there. :eyebrow:
The weather freak said it was gonna be another smoker today so I figured I'd least get me new direction switch installed while it was still tolerable out this morning.

This proved to be quite a task, and before I knew it, I was drowning in my own sweat :laf:
I'm not sure what kind of magic they use to feed a bundle of 10 wires down through the column at the factory, but I'd sure like to see it.

I finally decided that if I lined up all the ends of each wire, then pulled each one back 3/4's of inch below the next, I'd have a tapered end to the whole bundle :eyebrownod: Wrap that pig in tape and shove, I say shove her in!

With a little help from a homemade puller coming up through the bottom, 45 minutes later I ended up with this :congrats:

Something in the security is preventing me from doing this in all one post...so I gotta break it up here, till I figure that out.

I think I found out why I was having so much trouble with the lights too.  Some Einstein prior to this one tried putting in a directional switch also.
Problem was he had no idea how to do it, so he did...what appears to be, chopped the harness up and fed it up through the bottom, and then spliced everything back together.
I quick looked at the VIN number to see if the truck came from West Virginia.

So now this moron has all these butt splices inside the column, and you KNOW what that's going to do when the gear selector
goes up and down?
Its going to make hamburger out of everything in there.

Here's a pic of the old switch and harness.

The whole time I'm doing all this, I can here that all too famous sound of mud wasps going to work. I had no idea where they were, but they werent bothering me at the time.

I decided to pop the hood and see what they were building since it finally decided they was under there having a free for all.
WaLaaa...it didn't take me long to chop that structure down and create a frenzy :innocentwhistle:

Mission accomplished until the next package arrives :eyebrow: Thanks again Barry.
Now I gotta a small mess to clean up and get ready for the next mission.

The automatic transmission is what transfers the power from the engine to the wheels, via a pair of drive shafts and a transfer case.

I got a pretty good sized box in the mail today from Canada :yoyo: :congrats: :highclap: :yahoo:

I rummaged through it as fast as I could looking for some homemade cookies....never found a one

I do gotta tell ya though.  :laf: There was a little orange oil filter box inside with the other goodies that kinda rattled and rolled inside when ya moved it.
I knew without a doubt that Barry sent me that damn hornets nest. I opened her as slooooow as I could and kept a keen ear the whole time.

.......but nope! Just screws and bulbs etc. :whew:
LOL

Thanks again you guys Mandy, Barry and Farmer guy. :highclap:

Well, that turned out to be so simple I was kind of inviting chaos :laf:
I wondered if I was going to pull this off before it got dark so I didn't stop to take pics of the process.

But everything way better then planned. 3 hours start to finish, tear out the old, clean up the new and securely install it.
No heat and or mosquitoes to deal with and temps in the 60's. It was SWEET!
