Title: What about having a shoot at the LBL
Post by: Roundman on September 26, 2010, 06:16:33 PM
Would there be any interest in having a shoot at the lbl? Is there a place we could have one? Have a "one shot" competition at 200 yards with the winner getting some small token. Donate $5 and get a target. You would have to use your coyote hunting rifle, not some 17lb bench gun. Shoot standing or maybe off of sticks. Heck maybe forget the money and just do it for fun. Just a thought

I would but I don't know how well my shotgun will pattern at 200 yards.

Not a bad idea though for anyone interested.  :eyebrownod:

No, NO, not at all, I just thought our prairie dog towns might give us a little unfair advantage. On most of the towns 200 to 400 yards is an average shot.

I admit to missing a few after 250 or so yards.  :innocentwhistle:

OK, maybe more than a few.  :innocentwhistle:

There is a range and I think it allows for up to 400 yds. But, it must be reserved and I am not sure how many are allowed on it at once for safetey reasons.I also think there is some time limit on said reservation if you can get one. Never used it before so don't know all the perticulars. Jimmie

The range at Golden Pond has just reopened.  They completely reworked it while they were building the new 68/80 hwy.  It has been extended to 175 yrds (from 100).  Must have been someone from here in the east that redesigned it for long range shooting   At present, it is on a first come basis, with no registration before you shoot.  They told me they expect that to change.  They will probably go back to the reservations and a 2 hour time block.  Since we have started to be somewhat know for our Feb hunt, we might be able to work something out with them for an afternoon.  Jimmy, you know everyone and his brothers cousins at lbl.  If you want some help with a follow up call or something, let me know.  I'm probably not interested in a contest.  Its just not what lbl is about for me.  I don't see anything wrong with it and I know some of the folks are really into shooting.  At least the range will be open this year, so anyone can go shoot if they like.

Finding a coyote at the LBL is easy. Stay at camp and one will come a walking along directly. Dont belive me? Ask Pat, Barry, FozzyBear and a few others. We seen it.

Not serious at all Ben...... Funny as hell to see all the aggravated misses....... Many times there is no clear winner at all..... But still a LOT of fun...... :eyebrownod:

instead of serious I should have said close.  anyone hitting an egg at that yardage is friggin awesome.  even more so with hitting a cracker with a smoke pole at that range.  it would be fun to try though.

Sometimes I hit the egg inside of 5 shots............ most it ever took me was 49 shots.... :madd:

Cracker shoots have been popular at rendezvous since I was very young..... and 100 yds aint that tough for a smoke pole........ loading fast is what is tough....... :laf: :laf:

That's why I'm not interested in a "contest".  The group I would shoot offhand at 200 yrds would look like Bop's shotgun pattern!

Al... I would be lucky to hit the hen house at 500 yards let alone an egg.  :laf: :innocentwhistle:

Anybody know how long the range is @ LBL?

To quote Mr. Rich Cronk: “If you call the coyotes in close, you won't NEED a high dollar range finder”.

I think a shooting match could be interesting...

For what it's worth, here is the story they gave me back when they shut the old range down.  First of all the old range was only 100 yrds and didn't really have a backstop that had been built.  It was just one of the hills there at lbl and was across a ditch from where the "end" of the 100 yrd range was.  It was plenty high enough to keep from being dangerous, but the other three sides were completely open.  It was also not turned directly away from the hwy. There had never been any improvements since they built the road in there and declared it a shooting range except for the benches and an aluminum carport type canopy that had been set up at some point.  While they were building the new 4 lane hwy, they wanted to take advantage of the equipment on site as well as the available dirt that was being cut out of the hill for the hwy.  So, they relocated the archery range, turned the rifle range so your shooting directly away from the hwy, extended it, added the pistol range to one side, and put a berm around the whole shebang.  I have not shot there since it reopened, but I stopped by after the dirt work had been done.  Looks like it should serve the purpose pretty well.  It's free so it's not to bad a deal.  I think I would like to see them reinstate the reservation/2 hour block thing.  Would hate to drive an hour and sit for 2 waiting for a spot to open up.  Or, there be somebody there shooting eggs with match sticks making ya feel bad about the way you shooting!  :nono:

I know with the reservation system the locals kept it tied up. And now with it having easier and better access they will likely keep it tied up by the time we get up there. So it would be a good idea to check in on it if we decide to have a shoot off.

Never heard of cracker shoot for smoke poles. But have seen ramrod shoots and match shoots. They started at 40 yards and single miss elimination.  Ramrods (dowels) were marked in one inch incriments for accuracy and judging. Nock off one inch at a time.  Saw a cherry half stock pennsylvania at one fo those shoots that would make any gun nut drool. This same bunch of guys also have 22lr silhuoette shoots for ha ha's. Range is 250 yrds. And NO , I don't bother to try and shoot with them. Jimmie
