Title: Lathe Tools
Post by: BryanStanley on February 07, 2007, 07:29:44 AM
Been having so much fun turning, that I had to come up with something better than highspeed steel tools. below are some pictures of tools I have made for myself and other call makers. Thanks for looking.

The best thing about these scrapers is "they work". I have only gotten started using one of Bryan's carbide tools, but it sure worked slick so far.  It won't replace all your turning tools, but is sure a nice one to have.  More testing hopefully will be done today.

What exactly do these tools do?  Being call collector, I never gave much thought into the tools behind the trade.

I have two of Brayan's tools..and I can tell you they are awesome....the last one I got takes the place of a large gouge...it should be called a "Wood Hog" as I have NEVER seen anyhting take wood from square to round so quickly and easily...

Keep up the good work Bryan...I will buy several more!!!

Arky (or Bryan) - What is this "wood hog" you speak of?

Mr. Pilgrim
the wood hog we are talking about in the tool holder that has the hex shaped inserts.

What does it take to get one's hands on these tools?

They look very profesional and very well made.  Nice work Brian.

Now, if you guys want to see a wood hog, I have a 1 1/2" oneway roughing gouge that I would put up against just about anything out there LOL.  A 3 inch blank gets roughed down in two passes.  It was a gift, never thought I would use it but it works really well for making chop sticks and tooth picks  :)

Good looking stuff there Bryan! :congrats:  I really like the hex cutters!

Are you able to do this yourself or do you have it done?

I had a carbide tipped tool made for me once ... expense, but worth it!

By the looks of things do you do bowl turning too? :wo:

no I am just starting out making calls. I have only been doing it for a few weeks now. Oppps made one perfume bottle for a special lady too. All the tools I make myself execpt for the carbide. I just make a holder that fits and grind in the relief. These tools are not really that pricey. if you look at woodcraft they want 90 bucks for one and another 20 for each insert which really in not that big. When I makem you get several inserts and know that this is from a little guy and not some big fancy company.

I had allways wondered why wood spiners never used carbide.  I use inserts like that everyday at work.  we have done some wood jobs and used carbide inserts takeing .5 per side cuts.  but we do not need to worry about holding onto the tool.  gotta love a CNC lathe.

BigBen
I run an NC Mill so big that I can put my truck on the table or go down to our smallest one that would barly fit a suitcase. Man they are fun to operate

I actually run two machines now.  a 4axis mori seki milling center and a methods slant 50 lathe.  I ran a huge router that had dual 12 ft by 7ft tables at the place where I came from.  would have been a good machine if the company would have taken care of it.  the 4 axis mori is the best machine I have run to date.  and yes they are nice when you need a special part made.

We mostly do 5 axis here and a crap load of 3d surface cutting. Have you ever cut DIEVAR? That crap alreadyhas a 40 Rc then we send it to heattreat and back on the mill it goes with a 65Rc................nasty stuff

never heard of it.  but we do mostly monel SS and inconel.  along with some other super alloys.  hardly ever do anything normal anymore.

Bryan and Ben,

What are those alloys for?

I build injection molds for a living. Most of what I deal with is S-7 and P-20.Sounds like those alloys you guys are cutting make that look like CRS! The S-7 is only 50 after heat treat and the P-20 doesn't get hardened.
Title: Re: Lathe Tools
Post by: BryanStanley on February 09, 2007, 07:18:01 PM
CB223
those alloys are mainly used for hotstamp form tools. Your right s-7 is a tool steal and p20 is nothing compared to the stuff I cut. To give you and idea. The dievar is relativly new material  holds up very well under extreme heat. Very few places can cut it like we do and get away with it. The company that created this material come to use for machining issues. Plus it is very expensive. A block that is 22x20x16 runs about 20 grand.

I knew you were from MI, I have seen you on Michigan predator hunting. Just crurious I'm from Zeeland, MI.

What kind of tooling is needed to cut that stuff? Newest latest and greatest inserted cutters or just carbide end mills?

To cut dievar you need a very good tooler. We use diejet inserts, with SKS tool holders. Dapra cutting tools and a few mit's as well. Only time we use solid carbide is when we run small tools 3/8 and under for contour remachineing

You need one.
I would love to get off this 7 days with 5 of the mbeing 11 hours. Getting old quick. I got some turning to do. Have not had a day off since the 1rst of the year. even worked between xmas and newyears too.

I might need one, how much do you get for them?

I hear you all the hours get old, but that is life in a tool shop!!!

When I was in highschool just getting started in tool & die all I heard was tool makers get paid big bucks!

What I didn't get told is how many hours I had put in get those big bucks!  11 or 12 hour days are fairly common.

On the bright side as long as I stay where I'm at I will never work 7 days a week. The owners will NEVER have anyone working on Sunday. I might put 7 days into 6 but I will never be there during that 24 hour period on Sunday.

My dad has had a lathe for at least 20 years and I've never even attempted to turn anything on it. You guys are starting to swing me to the dark side...........I'm afraid that if I make the leap to trying to make calls that I will be lost in coyotedome forever......

I spend my midnites boring hub holes in wheels with an accu turn.  I was looking for A way to use those cutters on my lathe.  Ended up with A parlec arm that I am bolting on A handle.  Your way looks alot easier.   -KT

I know it seems to spoil some.  you get a better finish with a harder material.  but hand em a piece of 1018 cold roll and try to get a decent finish.  alot of our commercial jobs that are not for our main supplier are cold roll but even then it is 4140.
