250Savage and I made a quick weekend trip out to LaVaca county to hunt deer.
Friday evening we saw a couple wt doe and a spike. Decided to hold out.
Saturday morning at a quarter to 10, we were discussing calling it a morning when we spotted a HUGE symmetrical 8pt. He didn't give us an opportunity to make a move as he was obviously trailing the wt doe that was previous there. He was gone in less than 15 seconds.
That evening we went back to same spot hoping he would pass through (lots of trails converge in this area). Sure enough, several minutes after sunset he made an appearance, but would not give 250Savage a shot opportunity. He stuck tight to the brush until it was past legal hunting light (1/2 hour after sunset).
This morning found us back in the same area hoping he would slip up. Saw a handful of doe and fawns, a spike, and a young 6pt. A few minutes after 9am we spotted an 8pt. making his way down the trail. He wasn't the big older buck we had seen the previous day, but still a nice buck for the area, so 250Savage decided to take him if a shot opportunity presented itself. The buck cooperated, and my son shot him in the spine. Bullet entered just a bit to the left of the top of his right shoulder, and lodged in the hip on the off side. Some serious penetration for a Winchester 100gr. Silvertip! Buck dropped at the shot.
I figure the buck to be 3 years old.
Was a warm weekend. Temperatures around 87 during the day, and never went below 70 at night. Bucks however were most definitely beginning to rut. I was told this area typically sees the rut in mid to late October.
