Glen you still around?  Bill you still around?  Just wondering if it was one of you and they locked you up?

Yes Jerry I am still here  :laf:

Although that did happen about 40 minutes East of me.
This hunter will probably get his ass handed to him on a platter.I wasn't there but if he really thought he was in the wrong why did he call it in.I heard about this on the news and they reported that he showed Harrison County sheriff's where it happened and it was just a few yards from him when he shot it.

I am sure he will get a hefty fine out of this

My guess is he is good. Sounds like your average charge/shooting. It disturbs me that they say they have to treat it as a crime first then clear the guy? Should be innocent first unless they find evidence to the contrary.

Todd,

You live in a state where you kill the bear before it kills you.  We live in a state where the bear is associated with either: A. a zoo where they are cute to look at and everyone is safe. or B. they are stuffed and on a shelf and they are cute to hug and hold.  There are some bears that live in Ohio, but they are all protected.  Very similar to the Griz in Montana.  The assumption is that there is not a charging bear but a trigger happy shooter that just wants to shoot something.

We are starting to get some badgers around here and they do more damage than a groundhog.  I had a picture of one that had been hit on the highway and showed it at the Fish and Game meeting.  The game warden was there and I asked about them and he said that since they are not on the DNR species chart they are protected.  One of the farmers came up after the meeting and told me that if I ever saw one on his property that it was just a groundhog in disguise and that I should shoot it.  He thinks  :iroll:  he had one on his property a couple of years ago but hasn't seen it since he bulldozed and packed the area that they were digging up.

According to the articel the bear was charging the man. It was shot in the head at close range with a 12 guage slug. I would have to say that the man is  telling the truth and he was only defending himself.

I would think they won't press charges against him and he is gona have some storries to tell.

My real question is what are they gona do with all that meat?

Slag,

I read the article too and it does seem that he has a good case.  Whoever the shooter is he sure is a better shot than me - if a bear is charging at me I doubt that I could hit its head unless it bit the end of my gun.  The fact that he reported it would be an indication to me that he is either telling the truth or really stupid.

The meat has probably went to waste already.
Jerry I have to agree the hunter is more then likely telling the truth, but he could be stupid
I am also betting if this ever happens again he will never report it.The hell is going through right now is more then we could imagine.

Bear sightings are becoming more frequent around here I think just last year there was a bear shot in the city of Newcomerstown the bear was ripping through trash cans and it happened a couple times at the same home if my memory serves me right, and the feller shot and killed it.He was fined.

The rule of the thumb is black bears hardly ever bluff charge, if they are coming at ya its beacuse they want ya for lunch. I got a buddy that has been bluffed by more then his fair share of bears, and the only three black bears to charge him are all dead now, and ones a rug.

If a bear charges me, he's going to get beat to death with my empty gun.   :laf:

Be Danged!  :shock2:

That does it! The next time we go down there to hunt HaMeR, I'm packen my 45lc!!!!!  :sad3:

We've had bear in Harrison County for years.
Back in 1990 a guy from Scio plugged one w/ his 22-250 while g'hoggen.
Popped up out of the weeds & he shot it at close range.  :whew:

Then back in the '50s Burt Henry, down on Beaver Dam Rd. up from Tappen Lake, brought a couple of bear cubs back from Canada.
When they got bigger they broke outta the pen.
The one was shot shortly thereafter, but the other roamed around a while.
Pissed Dad off. The bugger would eat his wheat & then roll in it.
That fall a Minority person was huntin' rabbits when he kicked this brier patch & the bear reared up on the other side.  :shock2:
I remember he was quoted as saying "I just gave 'im boof barrels, dropped da gun & run!"
Latter, when he went back to get his gun they found the bear dead on the other side of the brier patch.
A couple years latter I was in the woods w/ Dad & I found this downed tree w/ a huge Wasp nest in it. Scart the Beejibbers outta me. I ran & told Dad.
Here it was an honeybee nest & it had the claw marks from that bear on it.  Thought that was so cool; I never forgot it.  ;yes;

Jerry

Maybe both. I ain't smart, but I know enough to not tell authorities that I broke the law, even if it was by accident.
