Title: Why I live where I do.
Post by: pitw on December 05, 2010, 06:04:21 PM
Well fellows I think I finally figured it out.  After butchering two hogs with my family[Tevis, Mandy, Bobby, Donald and Wilma] we got cleaned up and off to Metiskow for the third annual Christmas concert.  Our school was shut down in '86 and then turned into our community hall so this concert was just the community getting together for a special reason.   I can honestly say there has never been a better show presented anywhere in the world.  I've been kinda/sorta in a funk for a couple months now and wasn't happy with a lot of things happening in the world.  Today I got hugged by a 94 year old great aunt, we had our old school teacher[started there in 64] who is 88 play Joy to the world and Here comes Santa Claus,  that was followed by a standing O.  I got to hold the newest member of our community who is one week old :yoyo:.  The lads did me proud by being up front and center with their music, acting and making the show run smoothly.  I guess what I'm saying is I had a great day and am glad to live in a community where even the people who don't get along do for these type of occasions.

Sounds great Barry ! I love it when something happens
that makes things seem "ok", and pulls a guy out of a funk.

I'm with Al.  We need pics. IIRC, you have posted pics of plays or concerts in the old school before, no?

I guess part of the reason I live here is I got the freedom to do more than most people in the world.  Yesterday I got to be out in the trees getting a load of firewood for hog butchering today.

Nothing fancy around here as we like to keep it simple.

Take a couple of these.

And make them look different with the whole family helping and learning in my school.

The crew as it were.

Even get to try and tell the weather by looking at a pigs spleen[looks good for awhile but there is a definite bad spell later on].

Tomorrow the Mandy and I will cut and wrap all the chops, roasts and get the bacon and hams curing for later smoking.  With this help we managed to do one hog in 33 minutes from shot to hanging halves[the first one took a little longer but not much].

Then it was off to our local hamlet where the area residents put on a yearly Christmas concert.  The school closed here in I believe 84 and we turned it into a community hall.  No church so it is just the effort of a community staying together by doing together.  I've never saw a performance by any paid actors or singers in my life that could make a person feel as good as the people there today made me feel.
Started out with my boy Bobby playing our national anthem and the whole crowd sang.

Then an 88 year old former teacher[started teaching there in '64] played Joy to the world while the crowd accompanied with voice.

The youngsters did a couple skits with song.

Then my other lad Donny played a solo for the crowd, I wish you a Merry Christmas.

The local ladies did a skit they made up.

Followed by Santa bring toys and sweets for the youngsters[idiot on the camera blew this part].  This followed by more food than the 100 attendees could have eaten in a week and the fellowship of the best neighbors to be found.  Hope you all can find this type of joy for yourselves and have a great holiday season.
Barry

Yeah, I'm happy that you got out of it what you did.
I wouldn't mind helping out butchering the pigs, but the school deal would have been a whole nother story.  :laf:

I envy you Barry. That is kinda what it was like when I was a kid. The town was about 800 people and I was related to most of them. We had ox roasts, dances, harvest festivals, etc. Very much like what you live every day. You are a most fortunate man and I think you know it. It pleases me to see someone still living their dream life. Many of us are just going through the motions every day longing for a simpler time.

I'm happy for you.  :eyebrownod:
