It's that time again...For an update to the forum software. :innocentwhistle:
This time it's another major upgrade, meaning developers will soon stop supporting the version we are running. And migrating our database, all the posts, avatars, members and other settings is going to be a royal PITA!!
But it has to be done. We can't remain on unsupported software and safely remain on the web for any amount of time.
For those of you against change and thinking "why fix it if it aint broke"... you guys dont change the oil in your car until it quits running either ?
Since a lot of our toys, Photogallery, arial maps, chat, shoutbox, etc, have not been brought up to date by their developers, to be compatible with the upcoming version of forum software yet, we will not have a lot of those right away.
The change over does NOT have to happen anytime soon, but it is inevitably coming. And I would like to get it overwith.
Developers are currently issuing release candidate versions of the new software.
I have spent some time cloning our forum and it's database to recreate the whole place the best it can possibly be done, INSIDE THE NEW SOFTWARE. It's not the official new forum..it's for testing purposes only.
A select group has already been unleashed over there to see if they could tear anything down, find things malfunctioning, etc.
Now, I'm asking you folks to go over to the test forum and piddle around with things and let me know what does and or doesnt work, what sucks, what blows, that type of thing. Use it like it's going to be there forever, dont just look at things...use things, test things. Basically letting me know if my trial migration worked.
The entire place will be dumped when I make the real migration, like I said this new one right now is just a testing grounds.
Your login info that you use here will be the same there etc.
Once I feel it's all up to par, I'm going to dump that place and do it all over again but then it will be for keeps, etc. It'll have any posts from this forum that transpire between now and then included and migrated by me taking a new snapshot of our current forum, exporting updated data.
The Test Forum on the new software that I'd like you to play with and test is at http://testforum.finsandfur.net/index.php
If you are a Fins and Fur Hosting Client and your running an SMF forum, do not panic and please do not try the clone and migration by yourself. It sucks even for me, and there's quite a bit of detail to pay attention to during the close process.
I will take care of everything involving moving your forum, and all it's members to the new software for you, at no charge.

My dial up was going nuts at first....... so I figured..... Nuts/JimChampion........same thing...... But we got er running great now....
Barry needs the excitement anyhow..... :innocentwhistle:
DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is a high-speed Internet service that competes with cable Internet to provide online access to local customers. DSL operates over standard copper telephone lines like dial-up service, but is many times faster than dial-up. In addition to being faster than dial-up, DSL does not tie up the phone line. Coexisting with telephone service in this way allows users to surf the Net and use the phone at the same time.
DSL service requires a DSL modem, which connects to the telephone wall jack and computer. The device acts as a modulator, translating the computer’s digital signals into voltage sent across the telephone lines to a central hub known as a Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplier (DSLAM, or dee-slam). In lay terms the DSLAM acts as a switchboard for local DSL clients, routing requests and responses between each client’s computer address and the Internet.

I knew you would say that! :laf: :laf:
If you guys can't find anything to P&M about or anything that dont work.....I might just pull off this migration this week sometime.
Went to work today to find out, we got no work. Playing it by ear and will possibly will return on the 24th.
So I got a lot of time to pull it off and spend some time fine tuning.

There he goes again with the pulling.
Went in there just now. The new posts buttons were showing properly. When I came out of the Mod Forum to the list of Forums I had the white box with a X in it for the Mod Forum I had just viewed the new posts in. Make any sense?? :laf: :laf: Might could be nothin. Might could nto be sumthin. Only you will know. :laf: :laf:
Where did you have the red x? Assuming it was in place of the new post icon....I've been swapping those in and out trying to make new ones cause I dont really like those, and your cache may have had one of the new images yet.
Did it go away?
Yes. In place of the new post icon. It did go away after I left the test Forum & went back in. The "Mark all Messages Read" tab didn't clear it out. But it was gone when I went back in. It was OK this time after I replied to your incessant laughter. :laf: :laf:
My what laughter?
:laf:
Your hardy robust laughter. :laf: :laf: Not your keyboard replacing laughter tho. :nono:
The "jump to:" quick link wernt working for me there boss I clicked it and the top of the page flashed up loading and the only link the drop dowmn menue gave me was to the tailgate.
Thank you sir...I replied to you over there too. Basically it's already been duly noted by the developers and will either be fixed on the next Release Candidate of the software or the final version, which ever comes first.
I'm actually considering pulling this off Thursday night around 11:00 pm CST.
That way it'll be back up for the normal Friday onslaught of traffic, and if the weather sucks here this weekend which they are saying it will...I can spend the weekend fine tuning.
OK, so if my computer locks up at 11pm, I know who to blame. :yoyo:
But at least you got all weekend to help me fix it.
