Title: Collateral Damage from the forum upgrade
Post by: FinsnFur on January 06, 2011, 12:49:34 PM
My plan is to keep this place available for a short amount of time once the new forum is up, so that if need be certain things can be retrieved. I'll just place it at a different URL (web address) so that we can keep all our equity the same sorta speak.

With that said, I need to remind you that the add-ons will no longer exist until reinstalled on the new forum. Which will not be immediately because the Final Version of the software were upgrading to hasnt been released, which means a lot of the add-ons arent completely ready either.

Once developers release a final version of the forum software, I'll update any changes made to the scripts which will bring us up to date with that and then we can start looking at adding the toys back. Some are saying February, some are saying Spring

The only one I'm a bit concerned with is the Photo Gallery. There's no way for me to recover, save, or piggyback the images in there during migrating to the new forum. So if you have albums in there and those images are the only copies you have, you should start saving them to your PC.
I'm not real pleased knowing that images from the gallery that were used in posts will be dead, but I guess we have to have rain if we want flowers.
Noooo no  :doh2: thats not what I meant. I dont want any flowers.

Good luck, Jim.

Even if the site implodes and we lose half the stuff, no problem, we will just start over.

With this new super-duper upgrade, does it include an increased storage capacity of the emoticons?? There has been a time or two I wanted to use a couple,
and found that they had already been used up, and insufficient time had elapsed for their regeneration....

Since a lot of our toys, Photogallery, arial maps, chat, shoutbox, etc, have not been brought up to date by their developers, to be compatible with the upcoming version of forum software yet, we will not have a lot of those right away.

You couldnt be any more correct Slag :yoyo:

The change over is inevitable. Looking at the bottom of the forum you see where it says "Powered by SMF 1.1.12"
The new version is jumping to 2.0 but since it's not completely ready for public release they are releasing 2.0RC4.

The RC4 means Release Candidate. As in... if testers cant find anything wrong, that will be the final version. But right now it's a candidate.

The developers themselves are using 2.0 RC4 on their public forum and I did one fresh install using it for a new client and had no problems...and since I have to do this swap over migration for this place and six other clients. This place is gonna be the Guinea Pig.

The OLD forum is now located at http://www.finsandfur.net/praevius/

"praevius" being Latin for "previous"  thank you  I put a lot of thought into that.

I'll leave that up for a while in case anything needs to be retrieved.
All posting privileges have been turned off over there.

I've still got a little work to do here....but right now... me need sleep.

The jump bar is buggy, we already went over that somewhere I think.
I get the little "load bar" when I click the little black X thats by the time and date of someones post.
I still have no idea what that is linked to but a click shows that load bar. :laf:

We gotta remember were on beta software and the dips caused by me I can fix, the others will be fixed as they get reported and in the following version.

In the message section of the forum,  when you start a new message and type a forumite's name a drop down box gives you suggestions.  But that drop down box is white and the letters are almost white. They are very difficult to read.  Any way to change the background color on that drop down box?

What about the posts turning a different color after you've clicked on em and read them ?
Title: Re: Collateral Damage from the forum upgrade
Post by: FinsnFur on January 08, 2011, 08:02:48 PM
The drop down box that you type a persons name in when PM'ing?
I've never done that. I click the persons name out here that I want to message and it opens with his name already in there.
But I went up and looked, and took out the person name I clicked on and typed a different name back in and I didnt see any drop down

Scott, I've never seen a function that would change the colors of read posts. What part of the read post would change colors?...the text? the title? the window?
Trying to envision this and if I'm looking at a post to see what color it is, I'm not saving anything by knowing whether or not I already read it because I'm going all the way in to look at its color anyway. :laf:

well like, say when you're at the Home page, and on the bottom where it says "Recent Posts",
and when you click on a post to read it, you read it, and then when you hit your Backspace button,

or somethin like that.

I'm hearing ya now. Kinda like a link color, a hover color when you run your mouse over it, and then a visited link color.

Title: Re: Collateral Damage from the forum upgrade

Ok...you must be using Internet Explorer, cause I just seen that Internet Explorer does use a "visited" link color over there.

There's not a "visited link" color even defined in this css style sheet here, so you'll have to rely on the blue buttons that read "NEW" by the new posts.

already been somewhere.
Title: Re: Collateral Damage from the forum upgrade

It must be browser dependent, or what is the word I'm looking for?
I could rewrite the CSS sheet and add a visited link color if it's a big deal. I wont do it until the final version of the software comes out though, cause if they have to update this theme to be compatible again, it'll all be gone....and it's gonna suck doing it twice.

As good as I think I am...CSS sheets (cascading style sheets) are my weak point.

Unless someone has a legitimate reason as to why it shouldnt be done, I'm going to delete the old forum (http://www.finsandfur.net/praevius/) this weekend.

There's doesnt appear to be anything missing other then the addons since the upgrade, and shedding that extra 475 meg will make nightly backups that much sweeter.
