A buddy e-mailed this clip to me this morning, with the following write up. Awesome stuff :eyebrownod:
This is one of the most enjoyable video clips I've seen in a long time. Incredible stuff – these test pilots are really top shelf. So's the plane. I'd like to see results of strain gauge testing of critical joints on the landing gear after some of the more severe touchdowns. Pat
This is an internal Boeing film showing the demonstrated crosswind landing limits on the 777 and the 747SP. The way this works is that Boeing's engineers make educated guesses, but then the test crews have to go actually prove the numbers. They sneak off to Brazil to do these tests at a certain remote BAF airbase famous for its continually atrocious crosswinds...
So in case the gear sideloads become excessive and they fold one up, there is no one there to take nasty pix for the Airbus guys to wave around in the press.
This is some good piloting in getting these planes down. It comes close to "incredible" ... keep this in mind the next time you get a little nervous with the bumps coming into Dulles. It's nothing
short of amazing to watch planes of this size crab walking in on a landing.
Note the rudder action on landing.

They musta thought I was a terrorist :innocentwhistle: :laf:
WOW!!! That one plane practically landed sideways......... :shck:
Pretty impressive flying, and equipment. Great video Jim.
One of the two commercial airline crashes I was in was caused by wind shear and pilot error (the other one just pilot error ... and one of the the two military crashes was equipment failure - the other pilot error). I've had my four, but then when you fly as much as I used to your number comes up more often. Never got seriously hurt in any of them though (the military crashes were the most deadly), but don't want to try for five. :nofgr:
Holy crap Ladobe!
WOW !! Walk away from 4 airplane crashes ?? You've either got 9 lives or just a very lucky man !
Jeb
That's what ah'm thinking.... 4 crashes?!...holy crap I'd start walkin :eyebrownod:
