What kind of tricks you guys got up your sleeves for mild surface rust? Is there anything short of a compete professional reblueing?
Just as I have every winter up here, I cheat the heat by installing an exhaust water filter and venting my clothes dryer in the house during the winter months. It puts moisture in the air and adds otherwise wasted heat.
You already know where I'm going with this dont you?
This is the first time I've had any problems, and I noticed some small surface rust on the top of my Ruger 9 last night.
000 bronze wool and some kroil might work wonders.
A little bit of "Flitz", a soft cloth and some elbow grease will work some magic....

If you can't buy any Flitz locally..... and/or don't have any 000 bronze wool, you could use some burlap and gun oil. Might work ok for slight surface rust.
If ya don't have any burlap Jim just ask I know a guy that will give ya some
I have used Flitz and 0000 steel wool before with great results...... Just go slow and dont over do it.
You got a lot of burlap Bill?
Fos~ I've never heard of Flitz, but I dont think it'll be a problem getting it. One question though...after a quick Google search it looks like it's comes in over a dozen different types. The one mentioning guns and knives appears to be more of a wax or protector.
I need another nudge :sneer:
Maas is another product for you to consider. Like Flitz it is a metal polish. Unlike Flitz, Maas hasn't go on to many other products.
Edit: If you get the Flitz, get the paste polish for metal.

+1
Yes I have a bit of burlap
When I first read Maas, I thought you were talking about Mothers wheel polish. I thought heck I got some of that :eyebrownod:
Then Google straightened me out again.
Ok...I got enough to go on a mission now, thanks. Stay tuned. :eyebrow:
Guys on this site simply amaze me with their willingness to help out :bowingsmilie:. I'll be hunting an item from this thread now.
0000 Steel wool or a course rag and a Lil W-D 40 will do the trick as well, Easy though or you'll be rebluing :nofgr:
Then when ya get done, Put some oil on that there weapon Man!!! What were you thinking Soldier!
I'm going to look for the polish this weekend.
I know I know...WW...it's usually wiped down real good with oil. And naturally the rust spots took right on top where the holster marks burned through the bluing :doh2:
So how'd it turn out Jim? Like WW, I use 0000 but use gun oil instead of WD.
I am not real sure, but I heard Jim took some 100 grit sandpaper and worked on the barrel. Then he sprayed it with silver paint so that it would look like it was stainless. Not only that, but stainless doesn't rust as fast as regular so he won't have to worry about it ever again.
Jerry
Thats exactly what I did :laf:
It looks good. I'll get some pics this afternoon.
Actually it's been put on the back burner. :doh2:
I've been tied up working with two new clients wanting websites, and trying to keep things progressing there.
And a few days ago the company I buy my billing software from released a newer version, and I've been on the phone, and working with them to get things synced back up, for what seems like days now.
I have to run to town this afternoon. Need to remind myself to look for that polish.
If you spray it silveeer you wont need the metal polish.
This might be the perfect opportunity for a Krylon camo job.
