Wednesday AM around 5:30 I heard a couple of "bumps in the night" if you will out on the front porch. I had a light on inside the house so I couldn't see out. When I shut the light off inside & hit the front porch light I realized the bulb was burnt out. Well in celebration of this little "event" I have decided it was time to upgrade the home security around here. Monday afternoon there will a brand spanking new Ruger LC9 9MM in the bedroom with us. I'm picking her up for $340 & some change.
http://www.ruger.com/products/lc9/models.html
I know the 9MM is not the best thing out there but I needed to make certain I have something here that Diane can use/handle with her smaller hands. This one should fit the bill nicely. I'm absolutely certain she will have no problems defending herself with it.

Jerry
:shock2:
:yoyo: :yoyo: I see some of that in my very near future Jerry!! :bowingsmilie: :bowingsmilie: :bowingsmilie:
Cheaper method:
1. Go to a secondhand store and buy a pair of used men's size 14-16 work boots. Make sure they're well used and dirty.
2. Place them on your front porch, along with a copy of Guns & Ammo Magazine.
3. Put four (4) giant dog dishes next to the boots and magazines.
4. Leave a note on your door that reads:
Bubba,
Bertha, Duke, Slim, and I went for more ammo and beer. Be back in an hour. Don't mess with the pit bulls; they attacked the mailman this morning and messed him up bad.
I don't think Killer took part, but it was hard to tell from all the blood. Anyway, I locked all four of 'em in the house.
Better wait outside. Be right back.
Cooter
:alscalls: @ ^^^^!!
That would be funny but I can't wait to get my grubby little paw prints all over this one!! :eyebrownod: :eyebrownod: AND there is either an XD40 in 40cal or a Taurus Slimline in 40cal in the near future as well. With the Taurus only being 7/8" thick it's gonna make me a sweet carry rig!! :eyebrow: IF I get an XD it will just be for the chits & giggles factor.

Jerry
I'm with Jerry on this. Get yourself some good hollow point ammo and the 9mm is a formidable weapon. Save the FMJ's for the range.
Very nice Glen  And you knowwwwwwwwwwww how I am about my Rugers :yoyo:
My P89 is laying on my headboard every night.
I'm gonna try all sorts of ammo in this one Semp.
I'm with ya Jim!! I like Ruger handguns too. Got me 2 of them now. :eyebrow:
The critical defense stuff from hornady is good stuff. I use it in my 9mm and my .380
The Hornady "Critical Defense" ammunition looks real interesting. I may have to pick up a box to try in my .45APC and the wife's .38 Spec.
I've been feeding our conceal carry with the Winchester Ranger (Law Enforcement Ammo). The old evil "black talons". After all the media flack from years ago, Winchester changed the name, then eventually no longer offers the ammunition to the public. I have to go through my LEO buddies to get my grubby paws on it! :laf:
Diane will be using it in her .380 next month too. She just doesn't know she has a .380 yet. :eyebrow:
I talked to Wendy on here last night & got some great advice & a few pointers on this thing. The dealer also enlightened me a little on it as well. I'll be hardballing this thing for at least the 1st 50rds then it'll be play time with it. Then I'll figure out what I want to run thru it for self defense mode. It looks like FMJ for that.
Thanks Doug!!
FOs-- If you get some before I can find it I would be interested in hearing how it works for you.
HaMer,
I'm sure you'll get your hands on the ammunition long before I do! You'll have to get some pronto and let let us know your observation and opinion.
I unfortunately simply don't have the time right now.
My plate is mucho full, as I'm preparing and tweaking our gear and equipment for 250Savage and I trip across the pond to the dark continent. Four weeks and a couple days and we'll be wheels up!
Next week I'm gonna start scouting around for it FOs. I will be happy to report my findings here.
Best of Luck on your upcoming trip & I look forward to reading all about it & seeing the pictures.
Never seen one of those before Glen but it looks to be a good compact gun with good wallop.
I am fairly low tech with the by the bed gun. I and my family had the misfortune of being the victim of a break in back in 88 and I had an ole .38 Super automatic pistol by the bed. I stood there by the door thinking is there one in the chamber then felt for the clip and I know I had to have at least checked the grip safety 5 times. All this seemed like an eternity but was probably more like 10 seconds. I have always been around guns and had shot more rounds through that gun than I can count too. I found out real quick high stress situations is not a time to have to think of the above things.
Remembering what an old timer had told and showed me once came back to memory. He had just shot two would be robbers at his old store and was telling me his story of pulling out his old 38 that always went bang. He showed me the special bullets as he called them and they looked like nothing I had seen before.
Well to make a long story not quite as long they were 38 wad cutters turned backwards. Since that time I have always had a double action 38 revolver by the bed with a load of 158gr wadcutters backwards. I and my wives on several occasions on hearing something have picked them up to go investigate and never had to think of anything but pick it up and pull the trigger. Even women that have never ever fired a gun don’t ask what to do but rather just aim and shoot.

looking from the business end
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v202/Plumbrich/FnF/Chambers.jpg)
I have tested this load on several old cows and while pig hunting with dogs through the years, I get around 6inches and then the skirt breaks off and the base penetrates another 6 to 10 inches farther. The skirt never makes it through a pigs plate but rather turns into a slug. The initial wallop is pretty awesome and anchors things pretty good for such a low velocity round. I use tight group powder now days and it has very little flash and low recoil but have not tested this load on anything living yet.
I too am interested in your testing of the Ruger and may have to at least shoot one. That looks to be one heck of a small light concealable weapon for being out and about.
Of course someone could start a whole website on the best home defense gun and 5 years later still have as many different views on the subject as there are guns and calibers. :innocentwhistle:

The gun store owner that I helped used to have the semi wad cutters set up like that. He said that they were pretty good for close range, but not very accurate when you got much beyond 15 feet. That was many years back so I picked up some Glaser rounds at that time. I also didn't want to fire a round that might go through the wall.
Jerry
Those sure do look nasty Richard!! I like em!!!!!!!!!!! :yoyo: :yoyo:
This sweet little rig was just released at the SHOT Show this past February as I understand it. I will give a full report from my extremely limited handgun experiences once I get to shooting different ammo types & bullet styles thru it. I like that it's a Ruger & I have a lot of confidence in this rig. It will carry nice & I might do that until I get the Taurus 40cal. That is also a relatively new gun. It's only 7/8" wide & will also carry tight. :eyebrow:
As much fun as I think we're gonna have with this one I think the real blast is gonna be setting Diane up with her own .380 Ruger. :yoyo: :yoyo:
That LC9 looks a whole lot like a Kel Tec PF-9. The PF-9 weighs only 12.7 ounces unloaded. I think that is going to be my next buy.
http://www.keltecweapons.com/our-guns/
Good eye Semp. The LC9 is a Ruger copy of it. I just found that out yesterday when I paid for it. The dealer is getting 2 K-T 9's & the LC9 on Monday & he wants to compare them closely before I leave with mine.
these work great if you dont want to leave a light on...the gun is good to have also..i use the scatter gun with 04 buck...
http://www.hunteralert.com/
I don't know what the LC9 is going for, but my favorite gun shop sells the KT PF-9 for $240. (when they have them. They sell pretty fast)
30 round magazine in a handgun:
http://www.keltecweapons.com/our-guns/pistols/pmr-30/
I have looked at the PMR-30 several times (online) and would like to get my hands on one to see how it does. It just looks plain cool and a 30 round mag sounds insane. If it was stoked full of The Hornady "Critical Defense" ammunition and cycled correctly it would be one heck of a "clear the hall way" pistol.

I was gonna buy one of these just cause I think there cool as hell! But their is a huge wait time on em and the mfg is still having to work some bugs out and sides that!!! The guy up the street wants 525.00 at his shop  I'll be waiting till the price drops a bit!
I believe the revolver is handsdown the most reliable way to go. Six shots and if the bad guy aint running by then use it as a hammer. But I like the semi auto 9mm guns as well. The 9mm round is not as bad as everyone thinks. I know I don't want to get shot with one.
I like the PMR-30 as well.
Check out this bad boy subgun PMR-30.

Semp-- I dropped $340 on mine. Best price I could find locally.

Those backwards wad cutters are pretty wicked looking. That .22mag pistol is pretty cool as well.
She's out in the safe right now. I picked up a box of 115gr JHP's for her @ Gander Mtn while working today too. It's all cleaned up & wiped down with some light oil. Get the pics tomorrow & hopefully some range pics too. It fit's my hand nicely so I know Diane will have no trouble with it. I didn't get to compare it side by side with the Kel-Tech but the dealer said they were very close with just a couple small differences in favor of the Ruger LC9 making it in his opinion a better gun. We'll see what she likes & I'll report my findings IMHO both good & bad.
Last night we heard more noises from the front porch. I'm hoping to NEVER have to use this rig for anything but fun but we've talked about it & I am prepared to defend Diane & what we've worked for.

Uuhhh.......It aint gonna do you any good in the safe JaMeR  Get ya good kydex paddle holster ($23.00) and keep it on your side JugHead :innocentwhistle:
My nephew picked up the Kel-Tec PF-9. It's light and compact, holds 7+1 of 9mm and has attention getting recoil. I had originally ordered the PF-9, but they were/are extremely hard to get. I bought a Kel-Tec P11 instead. It's only a couple ounces heavier, .8 inch thicker and holds 12+1 rounds of 9mm. There is less felt recoil than the PF-9 too. It just fits my hand better. Price was the same for both pistols.
I looked at the Ruger LC9, but the magazine disconnect is a deal stopper for me. There's no need for it.
For me the disconnect is right "there" & it fits real good. It takes a minimal amount of force to depress it which I think is good. It won't accidentally get bumped & drop out I think.
I'll look up those kydex holsters too. :eyebrow:
Here is the newest addition to my home/self defense lineup. It is a 7+1.

Sent 35rds down range this afternoon. Then the rain hit again. :laf: Didn't start off too good but I did get better as the rd count went up. All 35rds were inside of a sheet of paper about 12"x14". As I went along I got more in the center of the paper than I had around the edges. :laf: It was a lot of fun to shoot even tho I didn't realize there would be that much recoil. But after the 1st clip things sure got better. No FTF's, jams, stove pipes, or anything bad happening so all in all I would say it was a good day at the range. All shots were at 10yds as well.

Are you still leaving dog food, cat food, and a saucer of milk on the porch? If so, I might know what the problem is.

I remember when I got my first pistol, I was disgusted that I couldn't hit an apple at 15 yards :laf:
It definitely takes some practice. I'm glad you got out with it. They can be a lot of fun
Looks good !
yeah Jim, the movies don't help any either when
it comes to shootin a hand gun. Everybody
should be able to quick draw and shoot a
cigarette out of a guys mouth at 20 paces. :laf:
Oh yeah my all time favorite is Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon literally rolling on the ground to get out of danger and shooting a helicopter out of the sky while doing it. :alscalls:
Took Diane & the LC9 to the range this evening. :yoyo: :yoyo: She likes this little rig so much I'm gonna have to get me a new handgun now!! :yoyo: :yoyo: :yoyo:
I also loaded some of the Hornady FTX Critical Defense ammo & shot a piece of limestone that was laying around. It was at 12 paces & about 8". I hit it all 3 times & the 1st shot really knocked the snot out of it. I recovered 2 leads & 2 jackets. I do NOT want to get hit with one of these. :nono: :nono: I hope to never ever need them in a self defense situation but I will be glad I have them. I need to run more than the 15rds to make certain they are feeding reliable but after just a few rounds they seem to be feeding & ejecting properly. It is locked & loaded with them right now here in the house & will remain at the ready.

Check out this ammo. CorBon Pow'r Ball. 100gr 1475 fps and 483 ft lbs. I've shot this before and it is ultra reliable.

I have been a Kel-Tec fan for several years. I bought a P-11 several years ago and really like it. You can buy a belt clip for it from Kel-Tec. With the belt clip you do not need a holster to carry the gun. I just tuck the pistol under my waistband and under my belt at the 3 oclock position with the barrel canted to the rear a little. It works great and is very concealable. When leaving the house I don't have to fool with a holster or anything. Just tuck the P-11 under the waist band and go. I find it even easier to carry than the Kel-Tec P-3at that I sometimes carry in a pocket holster. Love the Kel-Tecs!! Check out the Kel-Tec .308 cal. battle rifle. The "RFB" I think?? There is a you tube video of it somewhere?
Jim
I picked up a Kel Tec PF-9 about three weeks ago. It is a 7+1 9mm. I finally found one in stock locally.
Crimson Trace has their lasers on sale right now so I added one. This is the first time I've ever had a laser on a gun and I really like it so far.
