Title: Got lucky
Post by: Dave on May 26, 2011, 11:42:28 AM
Put a few to roost last night on the backside of my property - roosted right over the creek, probably on the other side  (My wife, Barb, heard them while working in the garden).  Set up this morning before light with a hen decoy and waited for them to start.  One gobbled about 100 yds away and my leg immediately went into cramps.  I was behind a huge deadfall and was able to go into the pike position without being detected.  There was about 1/2 hour of gobbling from 2 different spots, and the one closest to me started going nuts (more towards the geese on the creek thanto my clucks). Then all of the sudden I hear one gobble real close, but up where I wasn't expecting it.  The distant Tom had come off his roost and was working towards me.  I carefully rolled my eyes to the left, and he was checking out the decoy.  He slowly was headed my way.  I had only given several yelps earlier, and then just clucked every few minutes.  When his view was obstructed by a tree, I raised the gun into position.  He walked right into the sights about 25 yards away.  Held the bead just below his noggin, and it was all over.

I know the one that was doing all the gobbling was bigger, but this guy beat him to the ground.  I might be a lot of things, but choosey isn't one of them.

I like the colors in this one.

Congrats on a nice bird. I like your choice of camouflage too. Predator Camo and ASAT work extremely well.

Congratulations Dave!  Another fine bird for the freezer.  Looks like your striding pretty well with that there gobbler? -So that leg cramp must have taken a back seat to shooting a gobbler?   :laf:  Well done my friend!

Nice looking bird you have there.  You might not be picky, but it looks like you picked a good one.

Thanks all,
Just cheking in real quick - on a family reunion type getaway in Ocean City, MD.
FOS, I like the camo, too.  I have a few different types, but this is the one that I most always pick up.
Dave, You're familiar with my leg cramps.  Luckily it was still fairly dark, and I was able to work it out with a quick stretch.
And Shaddragger, that's an SP10.  Not that happy with the way it patterns, but it certainly worked here.
I have a chance to sneak out right now and do some fishing as everyone is either on the boardwalk or walking the beach.
