FBI launches media campaign focusing on Whitey Bulger’s girlfriend and her vanity

The FBI today doubled the reward for Catherine Greig, the girlfriend of James “Whitey†Bulger, and announced they have created a new public service announcement targeting women for new tips about the two fugitives.
Bulger and Greig have been on the run for more than 16 years since Bulger was indicted on federal charges alleging he participated in the murders of 19 people while also serving as an informant for the FBI.
Bulger is on the FBI’s Top 10 Most Wanted list and is the subject of a $2 million reward, the largest for any domestic suspect. The reward for Greig, who is charged with harboring a fugitive, has doubled to $100,000. Bulger is 81; Greig is 60.
Today, the FBI unveiled a new public service announcement to run on daytime television shows in 14 media markets around the country, even as they continue to insist the search for Bulger continues worldwide.
“We are trying to reach a different audience that will produce new leads in the case,†said Special Agent Richard Teahan, who has been tracking Bulger since 2006 as leader of the Bulger Task Force. “Greig has certain habits, characteristics, and idiosyncrasies that are recognizable.â€
The public service announcements will cost taxpayers $50,000 and will run on shows including The View, Dr. Oz, Regis and Kelly, and Ellen.
The 14 cities where the PSA will air “were chosen because the FBI knows or suspects Greig or Bulger has ties to those areas,’’ the FBI said. In alphabetical order, they are: Albuquerque, Biloxi, Boston, Chicago, Ft. Myers, Miami, Milwaukee, Mobile, New Orleans, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, Tampa, and Tucson.
The media campaign will also include putting images of Greig and Bulger on digital billboards across the country, including in New York’s Times Square, and by adding the PSA to iTunes, the FBI’s website, and the law enforcement agency’s accounts on Facebook, You Tube and Twitter.
Those programs, the FBI said, draw heavily female audiences. The FBI believes that Greig likely has been out in the public more than Bulger, and that she likely has frequented beauty parlors and medical facilities that cater to women.
“Greig is known to frequent beauty salons,’’ the FBI says in Greig’s wanted poster. “She has an affinity for animals, especially dogs. Greig is likely to have well-kept teeth. Prior to fleeing, she is known to have had multiple plastic surgeries.’’
Last year, the FBI placed ads in Plastic Surgery News and the American Dental Association’s newsletter with photos of Bulger and Greig, seeking new information. This fall, the FBI told the Globe’s Shelley Murphy they had received up to 100 leads due to that campaign.
The Globe has reported that the last “credible sighting†of Bulger was in London in 2002.
