I spotted a coyote in a hayfield and positioned myseld for a shot. I nailed him and he kicked around on the ground for several moments. When I started towards him he jumped up and ran into the woodline. I noticed a large wound on his shoulder where I shot him. There was a lot of blood where he was rolling around on the ground. When he ran into the woods i left for an hour and came back to find him. I looked for another hour but couldnt find the blood in the woods. I circled around but nothing.
I am certain he will expire but sadly no pics.

I lost one Sunday AM myself. I hit it with the 204 at around 60yds in the shoulder with my 39gr BK groundhog loads. Knocked it down. It jumped right back up & hit the woods. Never found any blood or fur anywhere. Wish I woulda had the coyote loads,, 40gr HP's,, for the 204 that AM. Fast fprward now. Same field Sunday afternoon I rifled one off at another coyote at closer to 175yds off hand with the 221FireBall. Diane said by the reaction it was a clean miss just over it's shoulders. Pumped & pissed at the same time. :laf: :laf: You'll connect solidly again. :yoyo: :yoyo:
That sucks Dave but three quarters of the fun is still getting out there. And who knows, you might come across his carcass yet.
Glen....how many times have we told you, leave the shooting to Princess Di?
:laf: We both turned & looked behind us at the same time. The coyote was standing there. I said "There's another damn coyote!!" She said "Yeah. So??!!" :doh2: I picked the 221 up & it went in the woods. I lip squeaked & when it came out I promptly missed it. :yoyo: :yoyo: That'll learn it to come out when I'm there. :laf: :laf:
Woulda been a different story if I woulda had my 17HMR at that piddly range. :sneer:
Them dag gone things are tough when you hit them and tougher to hit in the first place.

I have found unless you have a good heart shot a blood trail is almost impossible to find. I think it must be from the thick hair soaking up the blood. Most of them I shoot drop dead immediately, but I have a had a few run and its makes for a tough track. (shooting 22.250 Rem sundero LH Barnes Blitzking 55 grain)

I believe that SCCH. I carry 40gr Berger HP's when I coyote hunt. These were just targets of opportunity for me. Next time I shoot a little further back for sure.
