I haven't been around the list for quite a while, so hope this isn't a repeat.
Here’s a quiz for you mush heads.
The Rules: :readthis:
:nofgr: No cheating.
:nofgr: No using your computer, no search engines or posting the question on them.
:nofgr: No looking in books, etc.
:nofgr: No looking at maps of any kind (computer, books, globes, etc).
:nofgr: No asking someone else.
:nofgr: No forum discussion until someone is declared the winner. Post your four (4) answers only.
Just use your noodles only and let’s see whose is not full of mush. :innocentwhistle:
If you've already seen this quiz (and so know the answers), please let the other members have some fun with it.
I’ll declare the winner, and will provide the argument to justify the only real answer if needed.
The Quiz:
1. Which US state is the farthest?
A. East
B. West
C. North
D. South
Let's add a part "E" to the quiz...
E. Why?
Florida, Hawaii, Alaska, Texas? Probably want to change that after my coffee.
Maine,Hawaii,Alaska,Florida
I've seen this quiz before so, following the rules Ladobe laid out, I ain't saying. :nono:
I also know the answer to E. :eyebrownod:
Same a Lineman
Alaska, Alaska, Alaska, Florida.
Celebration of Stewards folly... "The purchase of Alaska from Russia"?
Thanks for the replies gents.
Those taking the quiz don't forget "E". The replies so far - while they do have some of the correct elements of the only correct answer they are still wrong.
However they did fall into what is the highest percentile of general knowledge in this country with the rest of "us" mushheads. :doh2:
Semp - thanks for holding off. I'll ask you for the "why" later if nobody gets it... as your test.
My best guesses:
A. East - Maine
B. West - Hawaii
C. North - Alaska
D. South - Texas
E - State of confusion
Brian
My guesses:
East: Maine*
West: Alaska*
North: Alaska
South: Texas
Nope, nobody has given a correct answer yet, and none even close to complete.
Let 'er run for a while, but when several folks cry wolf I'll give you a hint that should help alot if you want.
BTW, the quiz is which "state", and does not include any US Territories.
Larry :corn:
this is a old one but a good one :highclap:
Farthest from what?
Leave it to an Alaskan .... :rolleye: :alscalls:
Farthest: Superlative form of far. The correct answer for this quiz matters not what state you are in, unless the state of confusion, and so matters not from which state where you live you are offering your answer from.
:corn:
Edit to clarify and add: Those who have seem something similar and think they know the "correct" answer, please feel free to send me a "Quiz" PM with it, incluidng a simple one sentence "why".
East-- The State that has Marthas Vineyard or Nantucket or whatever that part is sticking out into the Atlantic Ocean. :alscalls:
West-- Hawaii-- It's so damn far to the West you gotta fly or swim to get there. :whew:
North-- Alaska-- It's way the freak up there!! :laf:
South-- Texas-- I think the tip of Texas is lower than the mainland of Florida.
East I'll go with Maine
Not sure what happened, but I just posted prematurely, so here is the rest of my mush
West and south I'll go with Hawaii
and North would be Alaska
East - Maine
West - Hawaii
North - Alaska
South - Florida
i was wrong back then but this is what i think and i havent seen it in years
East Alaska
West Alaska
North Alaska
South Hawaii
in the lower 48
North is Minnesota
East is Maine
South is FLA
West is Washington
Nope, no Einstein's yet.
:corn:
they were the ones i thought :madd: now i am going to look it up :eyebrow:
You chuckleheads apparently could use a clue!
Think "Prime & 180° Meridian". :innocentwhistle:
yo quick change fos , but i am still lost lol
George,
If you do, keep it to yourself until everyone gives up.
FOstology,
Thanks for throwing a wrench into everyones fun until they cry wolf. :iroll:
Doubt they'll get it anyway.
:corn:
If you had a globe handy, all would become crystal clear....... 180° meridian is the key Big George..... :innocentwhistle:

:corn:
My apologies, but it was obvious no one was thinking three dimensionally.... felt a clue was needed before folks gave up too easily.
QuoteGeorge,

i am lost so dont worry about me :alscalls: :alscalls: :doh2: :doh2:
FOstology,
That's the purpose of the quiz, to flush the mush out. Nobody has cried wolf, so please respect the other members and let them run with it. As I said, when some give up I'll start feeding them clues.
In the meantime, if you think you know the "complete" answer, send me a PM as suggested above. Semp thought he did, but didn't. I'm sure there is others as well just holding off so eveyone can play the game.
Thanks

Since you drug me in to it, Ladobe, perhaps it depends on which answer you favor. :innocentwhistle:

Maybe some clarification is needed Ladobe?
Three Dimensional / technical
Practical
And if practical..... Alaska and Hawaii included, or just the lower 48 (CONUS)???
1. Which US state is the farthest?
can it be trick question
Semp,
Not dragging you into it, just stating fact. Even those that have seen it before like you and I didn't get it all right the first time around, and may not remember what is. There is only one correct answer as the quiz was offered.
FOs,
More than enough information was given as is without any further clarification. As I said when folks give up I'll give them pointed clues that will help them.
George,
Nope, not a trick question.
:corn:
man
and i thought thinking how Santa gets the gifts and his fat ass down my 9' 'flue was hard
Since Ladobe has informed me that I'm incorrect, he shouldn't have any qualms with me posting my answer given:
Since the Earth is not flat and is divided in latitude and longitude:
Alaska is the state that is farthest North, East, and West
East AND West you say? How is that possible??
Because the Aleutian Islands cross the 180° meridian (International Date Line). Some of the island are in the Eastern Hemisphere (east of Greenwich/Prime Meridian) and the others in the Western Hemisphere.
Hawaii is farthest South.
fos i said that answer and you called me chuckle heads
and i didnt look it up :nofgr:
East Alaska
West Alaska
North Alaska
South Hawaii
and yes i give up. it was a good quiz though
Well, I guess I might as well call the quiz, with no winner since folks are not following the simple rules.
FOs, got half of it right except for the IDL part (which has to do with what day of the week only), so he gets half a star.
The only correct answer:
East â€" Maine OR Alaska
West â€" Alaska AND Alaska
North â€" Alaska AND Alaska
South â€" Hawaii AND Hawaii
Why â€" Depends on your perspective.
To explain…
If from the physical perspective - Maine, Alaska, Alaska, Hawaii
If from a cartographic perspective â€" Alaska, Alaska, Alaska, Hawaii.
The difference of the cartographical convention perspective is because the 180th Meridian divides the east/west hemispheres on our side of the world, and it runs through the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, making part of those islands the farthest west and part of them the farthest east by “longitude†from the Prime Meridian, Greenwich, England.
The International Date Line follows the 180th Meridian “mostlyâ€, but has political zigzag’s to accommodate uniformity in some places. Without those variances, places like the Aleutian Islands would have different dates depending on which side of the 180th they are on.
So, depending on your perspective, physical OR cartographical…
Easternmost point
Sail Rock, Maine (66°56’49.3â€W) OR Attu Island, Alaska (172°54’34â€E)
Westernmost point
Attu Island, Alaska (172°54’34â€E) OR Amatignak Island, Alaska (179°8’55â€W)
Northernmost point
Point Barrow, Alaska (71°23’20â€N)
Southernmost point
Ka Lae, Hawaii (18°54’39â€N)
Thanks for trying folks, hope you had some fun.
i see , i didnt say any of them

Here is what I PM'd you:
QuoteHey Larry
Alaska, Alaska, Alaska, Hawaii
A small part of one of Alaska's Aleutian Islands crosses the 180 degree longitude and thus is actually in the eastern hemisphere.
I saw that quiz a long time ago and remembered how bad I blew the answers. :eyebrownod:
So how is my answer incorrect unless you are pulling a trick answer?
And by the way, Attu Island is not the eastern most point. It is Pochnoi Point, Semisopochnoi Island, Alaska 51°57′42″N 179°46′23″E by longitude. So even your trick answer isn't correct. :alscalls:
And yes I just looked that up after you told me my answers were wrong.
Semp,
All you've got to do is read my answer you just quoted.
Yours given via PM was wrong because it only acounts for the cartographic perspective and is incomplete without the physical perspective. I told it it was partially correct.
Touche on the Easternmost cartographic perspective - you are of course correct. It was on my list of several extreme points to chose from, but between handling PM's and answering questions I copy and pasted the wrong one to my answer. No Einstein here either.
 Hell I don't know if I passed with flying colors or if I shoulda reset the trap for these damn feral cats that are running rampant on the farthest North side of my house which faces to the South when the World has turned 180*. Maybe. I think. :alscalls: :alscalls:
Too technical for me Larry but I enjoyed reading & trying to understand it all anyhow. :yoyo: :yoyo:
 :laf:
East, West, North and South none of them are states.
