Thanksgiving Day, cold and overcast, snow on the ground...still hunting along an old trail with mixed hard and softwood..lot of deer sign on the ground...pretty good visibility...snow makes walking dead quiet...I am using the gun in my avatar, a .357 magnum, but now shes wearing a red dot...158 grain JSP...I come around a slight corner in the trail...all of a sudden literally right beside me a deer stands up broad side and looks right at me...I see spikes and swing the gun up cocking the hammer back at the same time...pop the red dot right on his ribs and let er rip..see the impact of the bullet rock n shock him..he runs about 20 yards...stops...falls down and expires right there...crazy fast action all over in seconds...what a rush..bright red blood on the white snow..round went right through him, good hole in..big hole out...shot range about 10 yards or less...venison stir fry, garlic, onions, olive oil and a tad of soy sauce, with some red wine..MMMMMM..thats hunting!

It didnt sound like there was a whole lot of hunting involved :laf: But the harvest looks bountiful :eyebrow:
Nice work by the way
It is a real rush to kill one slip hunting and especially with a hand Gun, way to go. :yoyo: cc
There is a reason they call it hunting. Next time just scare the deer and then start tracking. Nice eating buck.
Jerry
That thar tree stand hunting is mighty effective, but I think still hunting is a dying art form, lot more fun then sitting in a tree all damn day IMHO......

Dammitt I knew I should have put a sprig of parsley on the plate for a perfect 10 :doh2:
Thats awesome Nasty, Ive hunted a few times with a handgun, but never connected. SOmething I definitely want to do someday, Congratulations !
One question, I find the report of magnum revolvers to be quite bothersome to my hearing, aka they makes my ears ring like MAD !
Do you wear hearing protection while handgun hunting ?
I ask because I find that to be one of the cons of handgun hunting is I have to wear my muffs while hunting. Of course, maybe others can get away with it, but my ears ring enough already without subjecting them to magnum handgun sound levels, which by the way, are about the loudest thing you can hunt with, as far as i understand. Anyway, just wonderin' again congrats on the kill.
What the hell? Ya on a diet? Slap a slab of meat on that plate, better yet geta normal sized plate and slap leg on it.
I try to every time with a loud gun, in his case I had some foam plugs in..in the snow you cant usually hear anything anyways its a sight game. Def interested in some electronic muffs to look into. Woods hunting is where handguns shine, close shots and lots of sneak and peek cover :eyebrow:

KyBoarSlayer, a .410 handgun for squirrel n bunnies and such is a real blast :yoyo:
Nastygunz, great story! That's pretty much how we hunt blacktails in the west west- tippy toe along and shoot many of them at point blank range in thick wet timber. Snow is a super bonus when we get it. I love that kind of hunting in old growth timber.
Your buck should be supremely tasty. Ignore the feeble remarks of lesser peasants whose taste buds do not rise to the level of haute cuisine. But some ketchup and cornbread might go well with the red wine and venison.
I think nowadays tree stands are the norm and obviously work...but I think still hunting is the real deal..keeps your senses on high alert...makes you a real predator :yoyo:...Bow hunting too..I stalked a flock of turkeys and popped a big fat Fall hen with my long bow when everyone told me you'll never get close enough for a shot..took the shot at about 10 yards standing in a clump of shoulder high scotch pine..amazing rush :yoyo:...and speaking of old school tactics ditch that compound bow and try a re-curve or long bow...lil more practice but quick on the draw when your needing to shoot fast and sooooooo much simpler then pulleys n releases and sights and etc,etc...still hunting with a stick n string bow...that's hunting :eyebrow: :bowingsmilie:
