I have a mini lathe i dont have a clue what brand it is how can i tell if it uses mt1 or mt2 shafts?Im wanting to buy a 3 jaw chuck and some expanding mandels any help would be appreciated.

Measure the large opening (where the insert would go)
Morse Taper #1 is 0.475
Morse Taper #2 is 0.700

Normally the chuck will screw onto the lathe so you will need to know that thread.

yep, 12mm or 18 mm (roughly)
