Title: majic smoke escaped
Post by: BigB on March 10, 2007, 10:59:20 PM
I was turning some more acrylic tonight, and all of the sudden, the motor bogged down on my Jet mini.  I could stop the motor by hand by grabbing the wheel on the headstock.  I shut it off, and looked around to make sure nothing was in the belt.  Everything looked fine.  Turned it back on, and the motor sounded funny.  And then it happened.  The magic smoke escaped from it.  I knew it was done for once the smoke escaped.

Anybody know the best place where I can get a spare part that is circled below?

Thanks,
Brian

I think it may be a flux capacitor??   :eyebrow:

Let's try this pic.    What ever the thing is, it is mounted on the side of the motor.  I took it off to see how bad the damage was.  I turned the lathe back on, and more smoke escaped.  It stinks really bad.  It must be mad at me for something. :wo:

Oh yeah....that shot shows the call a little better. I think it'll be ok, considering the trauma it's been through   :whew:

..... :holdon: oh wait...yeah the capacitors  :eyebrownod: Heck it looks like they piggy backed that thing in there like they had a feeling it was gonna be a short ride.
Where was the smoke coming from?...that cover?
You might be able to replace the capacitors....but then again...what caused it?  :wo:

I don't know much about lathes, but it sure seems to me that the location of the motor is just asking for trouble and I'm guessing that it sucked acrylic dust into the housing and it didn't get along with the hot motor. I'm also guessing that you'll have to replace / rebuild / clean out the motor.

Wondering if there is a way to shield/duct/filter it so the air being used to cool the motor says clean

This is a link to an old thread on the USENET News Group Rec.Crafts.Wooturning that explains everything  you need to know about your jet and the capacitor that burned up.  If you are lucky, you should be up and running in a day or so.

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.crafts.woodturning/browse_thread/thread/5d52e73014e7316c/524348228d7190e6?q=capacitor&rnum=1#524348228d7190e6

If you replace the cap and  it still does not work, here is a link for the conversion motor that will turn your mini into a variable speed mini

Finally, if no one in your area has thie capacitor, let me know.  I have a Jet repair facility about 30 miles from me.  I can give them a call and see if they have it or can get it and how much.

I use to watch the magic smoke myself..........can't remember much about those days though.
I found the cause......quit a few minor habits and the magic smoke disappeared.......... :eyebrownod: :innocentwhistle:

Bill, you must have some pretty good eyes to see that coco dust amongst all of that acrylic.  The glue is drying right now on your call. :innocentwhistle:
