Title: Anniversary Call
Post by: blacky on July 23, 2012, 08:50:27 PM
Here is a spalted maple pot call with matching striker I made for a couple celebrating their 20th anniversary.

Another nice set Gene!! I made some strikers for my own use & could never get Spalted Maple to make any decent sounds. It was solid. Maybe the tips were cut from the wrong spot in the board.   I know the heavier strikers worked better for me. Ever have any complaints on Spalted strikers Gene??

Hamer, I am by no means an expert on call making or wood.
I have found that any spalted wood can be either just right or to soft  to use. I guess this is because of the stage of rot the wood is in. I also try to turn strikers so that the less rotted part is used as the tip of the striker.
It is a challenge sometimes.

The couple that I made the call for picked it up last night. He asked me if I had run it and I put some RainChalk® on the tip of the striker and let him run the call. He loved how it sounded and said he would use it to kill one gobbler and then put it on display.

Thanks Gene!! I guess I need to make a few more & try different size tips. I was going with about 3/16" to 1/4" for the tips.  And there is NOOOOO WAY I know much about call making of any sort.  :nono: :nono:  I've made a couple here & there but nothing seriously. Thanks!!

Hamer, try making the tip 5/16" and gradually taper it up to the big part of the striker.

Let me know how that works for you.

Thanks Gene. I usually don't make any til just before our season opens here so I'll have to remember this piece of advice. Thank You!!!
