Title: Install woodstove-- √ CHECK
Post by: FinsnFur on October 19, 2012, 07:31:36 PM
Finally got the wood stove installed, piped and running. Actually I lit her for the first time last night. Never installed anything like this before in a house, so I was a bit timid at first. I put plenty of them in out buildings though.
It's not finished off and pretty yet with painted backers, but I'm hoping it's at least legal.

One thing that spooks me right now is, since they require  a 3 inch minimum of the stainless class A Pipe to extend into the living quarters, and the fact that I wanted my chimney 9 inches away from the house to avoid the eaves...those two things cause me to require a 24 inch through the wall vertical pipe. The part of vertical pipe shown in the 2nd pic, gets pretty damn hot.
Granted there is a two inch gap all the way around it inside the wall via the thimble....but I'm unsure at this point if it's ok for that class A pipe to be hot to the touch like that.
Outside you cant even feel the warmth on the vertical run.

Looks like you stayed busy on your day off. Pretty nice old stove, haven't seen one like that in a while.

Looks good Jim. :congrats: If worried about the heat where you got the rock behind heater add some tiles or brick on the wall. This will also help hold some heat in around the unit more. (Google wood heater hearths)

Noticed the fan on the floor does that help keep the floor warm for your feet??? :laf:

Yeah the fan is to keep my feet warm.
I dont know if I'm going to use the fan or not. There's a inlet in the back for it, but this isnt the right one anyway. The neighbor gave it to me.

About the heat issues. The wall doesnt even get warm to the touch. Not even around that pipe.
The backer boards are actually 5/8 Durock cement board which I mounted on 1" spacer from the wall. We cant use sheet rock as a backer even if it's firestop because it's still a combustible surface with the paper on it. We can use it in construction for firewalls but not in an app like this.

My concerns... and it may be normal, I'm not sure at this pint and still asking people, is how hot the horizontal pipe itself gets. I cant hold my hand on it for more then 3 or 4 seconds after an hour or so. But the rest of the stainless pipe (vertical) is cool to the touch.
Heck the black finishing ring dont even get hot but the horizontal pipe does.
Is that normal for vertical runs?

Quoteis how hot the horizontal pipe itself gets.

I dont know either because the ones we had growing up my parents told us not to touch the pipes they are HOT!!. :laf:

I Really,Really don't know the ones we had like that went into old brick fireplaces so I guess it wasn't a concern. Like you going through a wooden wall would make me wonder but I have seen a many of them like that here in the SOUTH and only about 5% of them burn down so the odds are in your favor.  :laf:

Sleep lightly my friend.

WTF? Now I'm gonna have nightmares :holdon: :laf:

A chimney specialist from a hearth forum told me they considered it normal but to get a magnetic stove pipe thermometer to ease my mind, since all you guys were gathering around like vultures waiting for me to fry :laf:
