I've given the defeat of Romney and the victory of Obama a lot of thought these past few days (I'm sure a lot of us have) and what it says about America...
I was stunned ... stunned ... at the outcome! How could a majority of Americans not soundly reject Socialism and the lower standard of living it brings to each country that embraces it??
During the past couple of years I've had conversations, discussions, debates and the occasional shouting match with folks under 30 or so years of age that showed no sign of fear of Socialism. My goal, has been to enlighten them. Surely ignorance was the culprit in their errant thinking. If only I could lay the evidence before them they would see the folly of their conclusions. I was wrong!
The younger generations do not fear Socialism. In fact, they accept it, embrace it, promote it... and, in large part, vote for it. My error has been in making the assumption that they lacked knowledge. I now understand that it's not our differing knowledge that is to blame. It is our world-view!
The younger generations do not fear Socialism but rather embraces it for one very telling reason. IT IS FAIR! Obama's call, throughout the campaign, has been to get the rich to "pay their fair share". To young people, Socialism is merely a word tossed around by out-of-touch older Americans. It's not so much that young people are rushing to accept Socialism as they are drawn to "fairness".
And why should we (I) be surprised by this? The schools often place children in groups to work on projects where everyone receives the same grade. We give trophies to the winners ... and losers ... because we don't want anyone to feel bad. We do these things year after year, time after time, always promoting "fairness" above achievement. Until the point that young people cherish fairness over achievement. It's what we've allowed our schools and extra-curricular activities to indoctrinate them to accept and believe.
The younger generations embrace fairness because ... well, it's fair. As an added bonus they get to feel morally superior precisely because they aren't being greedy but rather fair.
FAIR is the new ideal ... NOT CAPITALISM. Capitalism is inherently unfair, therefore, it must be rejected! Limbaugh touted the election as voting for Santa Clause. That's my worldview. It is not the world-view of a smug, morally superior, fair-minded generation.
In 2012, the message of hard-work and independence did not connect with young people. A generation that is given ..., and expects ... one-hundred dollar tennis shoes, cellphones before they are teens, and drive newer cars than Dad, can't help but scoff at the idea of hard work. But fairness ... aahhh, that's an ideal they will embrace. Obama understood that. I did not.
The Republican Party ... and more importantly, conservatives ... have a unique challenge before them. How do we wrap the ethics of conservatism in the language of "fairness"? Until we do, we are doomed to lose.
America has changed that much. :sad:

We talked about this last nite at our men's book club, at my library. We came to the opinion that with the increases of illegal aliens and those on welfare it will be impossible to have a different outcome in future elections. :rolleye:
Not to mention what 'educators' are doing with the youth.
I was thinking of putting up an old thirteen star flag to fly to help remember what the Founding Fathers had intended for the country, not what Joseph Stalin wanted for us.
