Title: Frost flowers
Post by: coyote101 on November 15, 2012, 09:11:49 AM
While walking back to my truck after turkey hunting yesterday, I took a few shots of the frost flowers.

A little bit of nature's beauty.

That is a new one for me.  I have seen frost on flowers, but never heard of Frost flowers.  They look pretty neat.

Found some frost flowers yesterday.  I would not have noticed them if it had not been for the pictures you posted, Pat.  Thank you.  Wife loved them.

We went for a winter picnic yesterday to look at glaciers, mountains etc. and found these as well.  These formed on dead alder sticks.  In deep valley shadow so the light was poor for photography with a point and shoot.

Just saw an article on a scientific study of why frost hair forms.   The article shows a fungus factor in frost hair that grows on wood, such as I found, shown in pics earlier in this thread.   Wikipedia has an interesting bit on how the frost flower petals form that Pat's photos show.  Frost flowers are more a capillary and extruding action, similar results but quite different from the fungus process on rotting wood.  FWIW
