Title: Deer Down
Post by: FOsteology on November 24, 2012, 12:02:19 PM
We finally put something down this season! Not exactly what we've been looking for, but a buck that needed to be taken out of the gene pool.

250Savage and I made it out to our lease by a quarter to 6am and waited for the sun to rise. Temperature was in the high 40's with a slight wind from the NNW at 5-8mph. As soon as it was light, we noticed some chasing going on. A beautiful 8pt buck that was a couple inches past the ears and very tall tines with good mass. I figured him to be about 3.5yo so we passed and enjoyed watching him chase the ladies around.

Just before 9am we noticed this young buck with his nose to the ground, obviously trailing. Four points on his left side and what appeared to be just a spike for his right side. A good peep through the spotting scope showed he had a small (under an inch) brow tine and a neat point off the base curved to the rear and almost laying flat to his skull.

80 yards out broadside he took a 100gr. Winchester Silvertip from a 250-3000 just behind the shoulder. A short run (40 yards) and he took a nose dive.

I figure the young buck is 2.5yo and should make for some good eating!

250Savage and I will go back out this evening.. Hopefully we'll catch a glimpse of the mysterious and legendary Muy Grande...

Looks like the Brow tine got turned around on the wrong side, never seen that before. Cool! cc

Jimbo, it is indeed a wt deer. We don't have Mule deer this far south.

I've seen some strange/freak deer on the trail cam. There is a young buck that has a double main beam. Another with a typical 4pts on one side, and a huge 10+" spike growing out the backside of the base.

Nothing aside from a couple doe and nubbin' bucks seen last night and this morning.

Interesting. You must be really south, I've seen Mule deer in Midland unless they were farmed.

Non the less it's a nice looking deer for sure. I still like the dark face

Just found this. Way to go 250!  :congrats:  Freezers got some meat.  Now it's time to concentrate on the big bucks like your Dad said.

Perfect shot Aaron!  That's the next best thing after the Muy Grande - an obvious cull/shooter buck to get the heart a thumpin hard!  :yoyo:
