Title: 17 winchester super magnum
Post by: CCP on January 02, 2013, 05:44:54 PM
Looking at the new rimfire line I believe the new 17 Winchester supper magnum fails.

"These cartridge makers don't get it".

I was really, really hoping they would get it together and produce a new .22 rimfire pushing a 40gr bullet 2200 fps plus. That would be something better to knock down predators for management areas and night hunters that were limited to rimfire.

looks like they made a 50 yard 17HMR a 75 yard HMR at best.

They say it will hit an 8" target out to 250 yards   Personally Id rather have a centerfire 17 so I could reload it.  I dont night hunt hardly at all anymore but think I regs changed to where we can use a centerfire now but not for sure.

In certain parts of pa you need to use rimfire only. I have a hmr and it hasn't been used since the first year i owned it. I have a feeling more counties in pq are going to be added to the rimfire only category soon and this might be a good option for fox and coon. I wonder what the ballistics of it are? How many ftlbs is it putting out at 100 yds?

There is also going to be a 20gr HP offered. If it will hit the 3000fps mark I am in on this one. I love RF rifles & know what the 20gr XTP will do in the HMR. I look forward to reading more real life data on this one.

I'm sort of with HaMer on this one.  I hunt a lot of "rimfire" only areas.  I've not been overly impressed with the .17 HMR.  I've never had a problem with the .22 Magnum.  So I've been using that cartridge with good success. I love the Winchester Supreme 34 grain .22Mag load.
I think this new .17 will turn out to be what the original .17 HMR tried to be all along? Time will tell?

Shot the 17 rem center fire for half a season on coyotes and wasn't impressed at all. Shot a few boxes of 17HMR at the range a few times and liked its trajectory and grouping but couldn't find myself buying one to replace the 22 mag for hunting coyotes on Management areas.

I really wanted a 22 super mag for management coyotes. If I found myself  one summer at Glens or Dave's with those ground hogs I think it would be a very very fun round. Guess I will have to talk Glenn into getting one and take him up on a trip to Ohio and shoot some Groundhogs. :eyebrow:

Since you guys got your 17 Super Mag write some letters to the gun ammo companies and help get me a 22 SUPER MAG..... :innocentwhistle:

:laf: :laf:   You're always Welcome to stop by & snap a few groundhog heads around with one of our HMR's Richard!!

I don't know that the energy will equate to killing coyotes efficiently or not. My main reasons for owning one is mainly that I can. Then there's those pesky groundhogs I get to shoot when I can spot them before Diane does. Not to mention the fact how much I enjoy the rimfires!!

As for coyotes or Bobcats I can see it being an effective round IF the time is available for the proper shot. Probably more so on cats than coyotes. I think the biggest concern is going to be bullet construction. If the 20gr HP can effectively penetrate a coyote shoulder and retain about 80% of it's weight then it should have significant wound channel capabilities to kill it. I would shoot the V-Max for groundhogs & crows tho.

I think it's going to be an interesting round & am anxious to see 1st hand what it will do.

Just found this. The 17WSM is based on the .27cal nail gun blank.  Here Winchester has been making those nail gun blanks & finally decided to neck the .27cal down to .172 & offer a new magnum RF round. Looks like,, at this point anyhow,, the ammo cost will be doable in comparison to the 17HMR.  Now I know a lot of people aren't gonna want to drop $15/50 on a box but I certainly will with no hesitation. I really need to see what this rd can do in the real world.

My only concern right now is the report. It might be louder than I like from a RF round but once I buy one I'm just stuck with it after that.
