That question drips with suspicion doesn't it? :laf:
I cant tell ya why I need to know...I just need to know. Is a 17 louder then a 22short?
17 HMR, 17 HMR II, or ? I believe the .22 short is quieter than any of the 17s that are currently being made. Now if you want quiet, pick up a box of CB caps. Just don't try to use them in a semi-auto.
Jerry
+1 on the CB caps for quiet.
The newer 1200-1500 fps pellet guns work great on the neighbors pets.

I dont think I've ever heard of a CB cap, Jerry and Slag. Now ya got me going to look em up.

Very little if any powder in one so basically it is the primer sending the bullet down the barrel. They are not made for 100 yard coyote kills, but work pretty well on small critters.
Jerry
Boy, I'd be afraid the bullet would get stuck halfway down the barrel, Jerry. :holdon:
I found this post (http://thefiringline.com/forums/showpost.php?p=923686&postcount=3) on firingline.com and it got me to wondering if it was designed for target practice and plinking and didnt have any take down power.

YES
In a normal barrel length .22 rifle, CB caps are about as loud as a medium to soft hand clap or a little quieter. I've been told that if you open the door to your house and shoot from well back inside, none of the neighbors will hear even in town. I know that they kill ground squirrels and grouse though we always shoot grouse in the head or neck.
You won't have a problem with them getting stuck. They are fun to shoot.
Jerry
Interesting. Thanks. :eyebrownod:
I'm gonna stop at Cabelas tomorrow and get some to give a whirl.
If you got any unused oil filters laying around, try one of these. :eyebrow:

Thats interesting Semp. Looks like it blocks your field of view down the barrel, but a helluva clever idea and I can definitely see it's worthiness.
Then again, committing to threading my barrel would be a huge step :laf:
My Dad told me 50 years ago that putting a Prince Albert tobacco can on the muzzle of a .22 rifle would silence shorts down to a quiet slap. The flat can positioned horizontally allowed the iron sights to be used.
I wonder if the oil filter positioned low off center would still be quiet enough while allowing use of sights?
I'm pretty sure you can use a smaller profile oil filter.
Also, it looks like the raised red dot sight on the rifle in the video appears to look over the can.
Cabelas didnt have any so I had to settle for shorts.
I gotta tell ya, some of those guys are such idiots it's amazing they can find their car after work.
This is how the conversation went after I scoured the shelf several minutes.
Hi I was wondering if you guys carried any CB caps.
Any what?
CB Caps. It's a conical ball, or conical bullet, basically a 22 round with little or no powder.
You mean a 22 short?
No, I mean CB caps. It's probably one step below a 22 short.
They dont have any powder in them?
Well if they do, it's not much at all, I said.
(funny look on his face as he comes out from behind the counter)
What are they called?
CB caps, I said.
CB caps, he repeats
Well let's take a look, he says.
I already took a look, I was wondering if maybe you kept them behind the counter....as I followed him back over to the ammunition isle.
He must not have heard me because he ignored me and kept looking at the shelves.
I said, Does that mean no?
Does what mean no, he says.
I sighed and said, does the fact that you didnt answer me when I asked if you kept them behind the counter mean that NO you dont keep them behind the counter?
long pause...I dont think he heard me again.
sigh
After several silent minutes of searching the shelves, real slow, as if his full attention in scanning the shelves is deterring him from speaking he says, there.............used........to ...........be....some........here.
:doh2:
It was right then that I just turned and walked away shaking my head.
How do these people survive?! :rolleye:
Jim,
CB's come in both "short" and "long" versions. I prefer the "shorts" as they seem to give better velocity (more uniform) than the Longs. I've got both CCI brand, and Winchester brand here at the house. Much quieter than a normal .22 short. Killed a bunch of chucks with them over the years. They are potent. Just have to place your shot. You will have to probably resight your rifle in with them if you do find some. As the point of impact is typically different than that of a normal round. This is where I found the "short" version more accurate than the longs...
Dave
Thanks Dave, didnt know that either. I'm glad I didnt have that to take to Cabelas with me the other day.
Heck just the little I did learn here was more then he could handle.
No one around here has them anyway. I grabbed a box of 22 shorts at Cabelas the other day.

 Those look like a regular 22 short, unless they are showing me something different from the link HaMeR.
But yeah I spose Cabelas could have ordered also them if I hung around long enough. I was hoping I could grab some locally.
We have a ton of RF ammo around here but the CB Caps are hard to come by. Might end up with the next best thing. I'm not ready to order ammo online yet. :nono:
Glen,
If you haven't got your ammunition by now it might be too late. I thought that I had better get some of the .22 ammo for the kids shoots this year and everything is out of stock.
Jerry
Reloading Brass is getting scarce on lots of calibers most all of online suppliers say out of stock. Kind of like Primers a few years back. cc
We're not too bad on ammo Jerry. Wish we were better stocked but we're not. Time to be frugal. With Diane shooting there's not much problem of wasted ammo tho.
Glen,
We have some that the club owns, but will go through about 30 boxes (of 500) at the youth shoots for the year. All the decent priced supplies are showing none of the "cheep" stuff in stock. The cheapest that most places have is around $8/100 rather than $25/500. $1,200 compared to $750 is worth waiting. I will just keep checking and as soon as I see it as being back in stock I will get some ordered. Now if they can just get it in and I get my order in before something drastic happens in Washington. I have fears of my name ending up on a US terrorist watch list for purchasing too many .22LR rounds. You know they could be used in a high capacity clip or magazine.
Jerry
It's hit/miss around here too. the prices are only up pennies on a box of 50 so it's like 25-30 cents on a brick. For now that is. Hope you find a deal on it somewhere. I'm not fond of online ammo orders for just that reason tho i may have to bite the bullet & go for it.
Jim,
I was just on CCI site and they have a new .22LR that they are listing as a Quiet 22. If you go to their listing of products: http://www.cci-ammunition.com/products/products.aspx and then go down to low/noise/speciality you can compare the CB long, CB, and Quiet 22. The muzzle velocity of all three is the same - 710. Would lead me to believe that all three have the same powder or lack of powder in them. There is a difference in the foot pounds of energy due to the difference in bullet weight. The extra weight of the Quiet 22 might help bring down the terrorist animals or whatever it is that you are looking to quietly dispense. I may have to try to find some of the Quiet 22 since it is in the LR and might feed better through a clip should I need it.
Jerry
75% reduction in perceived noise of standard velocity .22 LR
Noise levels similar to an air rifle
Very interesting
