That's beautiful work. I know so little about it that I'm not sure what green hedge is nor ca finish. Is the hedge a kind of wood or the color?

Hedge is Osage Orange or Boise de Arc or Hedge Apple. As I understand it was a good choice out on the Plains for windbreaks. Ranchers soon discovered the problem with it was horses would choke on the apples that fell in the Fall. The wood is very yellow,, almost gold & darkens considerably with age. Some Hedge,, like the above has some different coloring to it. This is usually related to absorption of minerals from the ground in Hedge fence posts. The grain is usually straight & plain but David found some nice figure in that piece.
