PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is serving 38 inmates bread and water as punishment for allegedly desecrating the American flag that is in each cell of his jail complex.
"Tearing them, writing on them, stepping on them, throwing them in the toilet, trash or wherever they feel, it's a disgrace to those who have fought for our county," Arpaio said.
In December, Arpaio began segregating inmate-veterans together in their own jail pod and rolling out special programming so that they could get the help associated with their needs.
In a patriotic jail initiative, inmates each day listen to "The Star Spangled Banner" in the morning and "God Bless America" at night as it is played on the PA system.
The sheriff's office employs more than 600 men and women who are veterans representing past service in all branches of the armed forces.
Arpaio also noted his office has hired 80 detention officers in the past year who have previously served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
