A parasitic twin is a very rare condition. It can be caused by in vitro fertilization when more than one egg is fertilized. The vanishing twin or parasitic twin is a second fetus that cannot live on its own. This is not the same as conjoined twins. A parasitic twin will usually die in utero and the resulting tissue is absorbed by the surviving healthy fetus.
