Title: New Ohio Deer Regs
Post by: HaMeR on May 13, 2014, 09:19:54 PM
FINALLY Ohio is allowing us to use ANY straight walled cartridge that is legal in a 5" barreled handgun,, we've had that rule for quite some time now,, in any rifles chambered for the SAME straight walled cartridges!!

The council also approved straight-walled cartridge rifles for deer hunting. The rifles are the same caliber and use the same straight-walled cartridges that are currently legal for use in handguns. The new regulation is designed to allow additional opportunities for hunters that own these guns or want to hunt with these guns. These rifles have reduced recoil compared to larger shotguns, and the rifles are more accurate than the same caliber handgun.

Legal deer hunting rifles are chambered for the following calibers: .357 Magnum, .357 Maximum, .38 Special, .375 Super Magnum, .375 Winchester, .38-55, .41 Long Colt, .41 Magnum, .44 Special, .44 Magnum, .444 Marlin, .45 ACP, .45 Colt, .45 Long Colt, .45 Winchester Magnum, .45 Smith & Wesson, .454 Casull, .460 Smith & Wesson, .45-70, .45-90, .45-110, .475 Linebaugh, .50-70, .50-90, .50-100, .50-110 and .500 Smith & Wesson.

A new regulation states shotguns and straight-walled cartridge rifles used for deer hunting be loaded with no more than three shells in the magazine and chamber combined. The current hunting regulation states a shotgun must be plugged if it is capable of holding more than three shells.

Now maybe my next Marlin 357 picture will have a nice buck in it!!  :yoyo: :yoyo: :highclap: :highclap: :eyebrow: :eyebrow:

45-70 from a Contender!  I think I will pass on firing that one.  I have a .223 barrel for mine and that is bad enough to fire.

The only time I wear hearing protection when hunting.  Eighteen inch .223!

I was at the gunshot tonight and they had a Handi-Rifle in 45-70.  I picked it up and it is a light little rifle with a BIG hole in the barrel.  One of the brothers said that he bought the first one that came in and took it out and shot it.  He said that prior to firing that gun that he had only been smacked in the head once by firing a rifle - now he has been smacked twice.  He said you really want to have a very good grip, etc.  I said that I didn't have to worry because I wouldn't be firing one.    :rolleye:       :rolleye:

Nice looking .223 Mr John!! Brother Dave also has a .221FB for his. Man that rig has killed a ton of groundhogs!!

Me either Jerry!!  :nono: :nono:

Yeah those cute little 200 gr'ers MIGHT work on a WT Dale!!  :laf: :laf: Nice rig you got there too.

Jim-- They were in a 5"+ barreled handgun for quite some time now. Ohio just didn't allow any rifle hunting for deer is all. With the advent of the inline ML'ers & all the new slug gun & ammo improvement hunters have been outperforming quite a few of the straight walled handgun cartridges for sometime now so it only makes sense that they would allow these cartridges in a rifle from a ballistics POV. That & hopefully some of these regs from the dark ages are now being re-considered.  Jerry might have a better answer to your question.

:laf: :laf:  Yeah I know. Had to try anyhow!!

The straight walled cartridge in a 5" minimum length barrel in the above cartridges has been in effect for quite some time now. Nooo idea how long either.  I'm just happy to see things changing. Now I doubt we'll ever see the .243, .30.06, .30-30 rds ever legalized but I'm still happy with the results & that the ODNR has seen fit to allow these rds in a rifle. I'll be  in the tree stand come December!!  :yoyo: :yoyo:
