Title: First turkey of the fall season
Post by: coyote101 on November 20, 2014, 09:48:48 PM
I was in the blind by 5:20 with my jake decoy set about 20 yards in front of me. I started making occasional turkey noises a couple of minutes after 6:00. About 6:15 I gave a long series of yelps and the turkeys really lit up. They were behind me across a small river where I couldn't see them. Whenever one would call, I would try to mimic the call.

About 6:40 a group of about eight to ten gobblers came in to the decoy from my left. They came in fairly quickly and kind of took me by surprise, but I was able to grab the crossbow and shoot the first one that presented a good shot. He ran ten or fifteen yards and went down.

His buddies strutted around him and pecked at his head for a couple of minutes before heading off into the woods.

I'm wearing the orange because it's firearm deer season in Kentucky.

The trusty Ten Point and its latest victim.

I know nothing of turkey hunting but that is impressive in several ways, from the calling to the shot with crossbow to the sun tinged photo.  WTG!

Sounds exciting!
They've closed our fall season in S.E. PA because of declining numbers.
