Title: 9 out 0f 10 aint bad
Post by: dog dropper on January 23, 2015, 07:46:40 PM
Well its getting to that point in the winter where the coyotes are hungry and looking for scraps. So what a good time to go and set some snares and call over top of some dead cows. And that's just what Donald and I have been doing for the last ten days. First day I went over to my sweet spot for setting snares, and set around 13 within a half mile radius. And seeing as I only have an hour of Sunlight after getting off the bus that's all I could do for that day. Within the next few days Donald and I went out trying calling in different places. Within five days Donald and I had each got two coyotes calling out and about. By that time I had enough gas money to go up to my sweet spot and check the snares, and to my delight I had two coyotes in two snares that I had thought had no hope of catching anything but the breeze. It never hurts to set extras I suppose. I was busy the next day but on the tenth day I went out to my favorite hill at dawn before school, and blew on my call that Al had built for and put my name on and within 10 minutes I had two coyotes galloping in, and with my oh so wonderful marksmanship had them both on the ground with only three shots. I've always been amazed how I can hit a running coyote at 75 yards easier then one standing at 100. So I hauled those back to the truck and put them in my box and locked it. Ive never really had to protect my coyotes but after an incident at the school with some coyote thieves I keep mine protected. Went to school and did my best not to nod off through all the notes and lectures then went and called over top of a fresh bait pile on the way home. And I shot this behemoth.

Weighing in at a whopping 50 pounds, right on the dot.

Biggest coyote that I've ever shot. So all in all I guess 9 coyotes in ten days ain't bad.

You are having WAY too much fun and shooting coyotes that are really prime.  Since coyote thieves are there I am assuming that the price for fur must be up.  Are you using your .243 when you go after them or are you knocking them down with another rifle?

You might need to change your name to coyote poison!

WTG!  That is a HUGE coyote, ginormous for anywhere west of the Great Lakes.   I don't think I've ever even seen one that big.

Man does your story bring back memories:  of quick hunts before or after school, gathering by an old steam radiator before classes started and talking about where we'd killed ducks etc. that morning or the evening before; if anyone had seen the game warden and where.  To hunt before school everything but the shot and the dash to catch the bus had to be done in the dark, walking a mile or two to get in a few shots at first light then running for the bus.

Great post!

Really enjoyed the pictures and the story. But looks just a tad to cold for this desert dweller.

Thanks guys, yea the coyote prices are up above average, and I'm still using the .243 just with lighter lead. It's done me good

Very nice job with the coyote riddance. Where were these 9 put down? No need to hunt near there as that area should now be coyote free :bowingsmilie:
