Title: Spun a couple more
Post by: HaMeR on April 09, 2007, 12:51:34 PM
I have an endgrain walnut, a cocobolo, & what I believe is bocote. Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm used to working with oak,pine,cherry etc,,.  Anyhow a call turner here sent me a couple blanks to get me started & the coco/bocote(?) is from that stock. The walnut is from my personal stash. :eyebrow: :laf:  Bear with me while I try to get these posted up. I'm going with the bocote(?) 1st.

They are not voiced yet. The order is in to Al for the enclosed reeds. :eyebrownod:  I still need to finish the barrel end as well. They are setting on the mouthpiece.  I really need to find a better way for some things but so far they don't seem too bad. The finish that was suggested,, boiled linseed/shellac/den.alc with carnauba wax is definitely a winner & a keeper.

I would like to also Thank everybody that has responded to my questions whole heartedly. Your help has been paramount in my learning to do this. While I don't foresee it as a permanent hobby I will most certainly continue to dabble in the call making field while I do other things on the lathe. You guys are the masters & I feel fortunate to be associated with such a crowd as this. Maybe someday I can return the favor for a new guy. And when I do,, I hope it's in the same manner that I recieved it. Professional & courteous.

For  a guy that just wanted to turn a couple calls here and there, you sure are spending a lot of time on them.  It is nice to see your progress coming along very quickly.  those look nice.  We warned you about call making.  You can't stop.

Those are nice

BUT

With everything going on around here, you really need to get rid of that picture in the background of your last post - or risk being tarred and feathered   :roflmao:   :roflmao:   :roflmao:   :roflmao:

Actually, they are very nicely done.  Keep at it.  You are making great progress in the turning area.   Finish looks good too;

Thanks Al!!

The wood taught me a few lessons that I can use. The walnut kept chipping where the 2 wide grooves are. Thats why they are there.

The bocote wouldn't smooth up nicely so I just put a little shellac on the whole call & used some 1000grit emery cloth. Then I wiped it down & grabbed a handful of shavings & burnished the entire call before it could dry anymore. Then I finished it. Plus I made a couple small repairs on it that blend in nicely.

The coco was just a dream to turn. Now I know why so many fellas like to turn it.

BTW-- Are you talking about this picture??  It's actually a 10 1/2" wallpaper border that runs around my den. :eyebrow:

HaMeR,

You are progressing pretty quickly and I have to agree that Cocobolo is great stuff to turn and finish.  Next you need to try some of Al's Blackwood - it is even more to turn.  Seems to me the higher the value of the wood the nicer it is to turn.  I did notice the feathers on the Cocobolo call and thought that it was an interesting addition.   :laf:

Thanks Jerry!! I'll call that one the "Struttin Coco" then. :laf:  I thought the walnut was nice until I hit that coco with the gouge. I'll work my way up thru the more exotic woods. But I think it's time I moved on to some other turnings. Coasters & calls are a lot of fun but I really want to make pens & watches. There just might be a market around here for them.
